First Day Back

First day of in-person instruction with Mr. De Palma's class and Ms. Dodd's class. Sometimes it only takes a few
s
imple words to express our feelings. One of our students sent us all to tears with her 4 powerful words spoken on her communication board..."I am so happy!"

Two-Hour Early Release Tomorrow, October 30; Student Holidays November 2, 3

Friday, October 30, is the last day of the first quarter and will be a synchronous (virtual) learning day for all students with a two-hour early release. There will be no in-person classes on October 30. Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3, are student holidays. Teachers will not be available for office hours and students are not expected to complete new asynchronous assignments. Regularly-scheduled classes will resume on Wednesday, November 4. See the complete 2020-21 school year calendar

Changing Your Response for In-Person vs. Virtual All Changes Due Tomorrow, October 30

Regarding the instructional model (in-person vs. virtual) - We will honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction. If you chose in-person instruction, we will assume your student(s) will return to in-person instruction. If you chose all-virtual instruction we will assume you will continue in that format.

  • If your circumstances have changed, please contact Patty Li by Friday, October 30th at 4:00pm by emailing (pli@fcps.edu) or calling 703-633-6700.  We will try our best to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space.

2. Town Hall Meeting - Tonight!

Courageous Conversations about Race

Mark Your Calendars for our virtual GBW Equity Event!
What: "Courageous Conversations about Race”
Where: Link will be shared closer to the date via e-Notify email.
When: October 29, 2020 - 4:30-5:30 pm
Why: As a school we want to create a forum where we can have open and honest dialogue about race and equity with our GBW community members.  It is a topic that affects us all and we want to know your thoughts!

We will be using the book “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You” by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds to fuel our discussions.  We encourage you to read section 1 (pages 1-36), and join our discussion.  However, you don’t have to read the book to be a part of the conversation.  We can’t wait to see all of you there!

4. Extra Planning Days for Kindergarten Teachers

Kindergarten Parents, in order to prepare for the transition to concurrent instruction, FCPS recently decided to provide additional planning days for Kindergarten teachers. As such, Kindergarten students will not have synchronous instruction on the following days:

  • Monday, November 9
  • Thursday, November 12
  • Friday, November 13

5. Kindergarten VKRP Information

The Virginia state government expects all schools to take part in the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). The VKRP assesses literacy, mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills.

Kindergarten students in Fairfax County Public Schools take the iReady universal screener reading test for VKRP literacy. Teachers interview students using the Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) for VKRP mathematics. After observing the student for 3-4 weeks, teachers complete the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) for VKRP self-regulation and social skills.

VKRP assessments are given in the fall and spring of kindergarten. This fall students will not be taking the EMAS. Students will take the reading test in the fall, winter, and spring. Schools set specific testing dates for each class.

VKRP is designed to help state officials understand school readiness and student success across Virginia. VKRP results also help teachers, school leaders, and parents know how to support each child's learning and development.

More information can be found here.  If you have questions about VKRP assessments, please contact your child's teacher.

6. FCPS Meals Information

FREE Meal Kits Available Every Wednesday at Greenbriar West Beginning November 11

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are excited to announce that FCPS will begin distributing FREE Fairfax Meal Kits, containing seven days of breakfast and lunches, every Wednesday at Greenbriar West, beginning November 11, 2020.  Location for pickup will be the Kiss & Ride lane at door 8.

The kits will be available for pick up from 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. or until they run out. Meal kits will be available to ALL FCPS students and children 18 years of age and under at no cost. Each meal kit will contain breakfast and lunch for one person for a week. Parents and caregivers may pick up one meal kit for each child. Adults may purchase meal kits for $28.

Don’t miss out! Stop by and pick up your no-cost Fairfax Meal Kit on Wednesday, November 11, from 8:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Please note that due to drop-off of K&R students in the morning, we recommend that you avoid picking up your meal kit between 8:30am and 9:20am.

Our goal is to provide every FCPS student daily access to a healthy breakfast and lunch.

7. Positivity Project For Families

Next week’s Positivity Project trait of the week is PERSPECTIVE! Feel free to check out the quote, video, and 3 questions found in this link to explore perspective with your child.

8. Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) Information - Reminder

If you have not already completed the SR&R form, please do so by October 31

Please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr.  Translated options available.  After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using the following link:

SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form (All links should be opened in Google Chrome.) The form is school specific and must be filled out one time per student.

9. “Go Paperless” Progress Report Option Now Available

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all ES parents to allow them to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of SY 20/21. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless" All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.
