Thank you for another positive week of school. I am so proud of our students, parents, teachers, and staff for all we have accomplished and learned together. Is there a Lemon Road staff member that has gone above and beyond for your student or family? Recognize them with a quick acknowledgement through FCPS Cares. They truly appreciate each nomination.
This week we welcomed back one class of preschool students into the building. All FCPS families and staff received updated information on Friday regarding the phase in of additional students to concurrent instruction. Concurrent instruction will allow students to remain in virtual instruction for the entire year while others can come in person for 2 days per week and participate virtually on the other days. Lemon Road will send a letter early this week with a link for families to update their preference if they choose.
As mentioned earlier in the fall, FCPS modified their homework policy during the pandemic. No student is to be assigned homework or asynchronous learning outside school hours with the exception of reading each evening. Grade levels are beginning to assign required asynchronous work on Mondays to be completed during the day. This asynchronous work may be completed after the morning enrichments or in lieu of the enrichments, but the Morning Meeting and any synchronous session with their teacher(s) are required and should be attended each week. Attendance is taken during the Morning Meeting and will be reflected on the progress report.
This week, we have some spirit events and contests planned to keep students excited and engaged in the virtual class experience. Beginning tomorrow, classes may participate in Spooky Spirit Week! See the graphic above to see the themes for each day. Participation is completely optional. We always love seeing your photos, so please share them with me by email or post on social media and tag us! Spooky Spirit Week concludes with our traditional Freaky Friday event in October – Costume Day! We encourage students and staff to wear a costume or dress up for learning. Please be sure costumes are in alignment with SR&R. To enhance the excitement, the PTA has developed a contest with prizes for students, families, and staff. Take a photo of your family or child and send to PTAcommunicationsLRES@gmail.com by November 1st to be considered. If you do not want your photo included in social media, please include in your message.
Last chance to get your spirit wear for the fall and winter! The sale closes in a few days. A new adult hooded sweatshirt that matches the youth has been added. If you are interested, please email Jen Edgerly at jennifer.edgerly@gmail.com to add an adult sweatshirt to your order. Looking forward to a great week. See all your children tomorrow for their Morning Meetings and stop by either the library book bus at 2 PM (Evans Ct. and Leesburg Pike Service Road) for library books, mystery bags, and some school supplies! Thank you for your partnership ~ Mrs. Castillo
Now that the beginning of year assessments are complete, students are participating in Reading and Math Workshop during instructional time. Typically teachers will begin with a lesson for the whole class then transition to small group, independent practice, use of digital resources, partner activities/games, and one on one conferences. Students will be put into groups based in interest, ability, and preference throughout the year. This model mimics what takes place during instruction in the building. During the small group time, you may see an additional staff member support instruction – this may be an Instructional Assistant, Reading Teacher, ESOL Teacher, Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, or Special Education Teacher. To allow time for the teachers and staff to differentiate instruction for small groups, students will be increasing their stamina to work independently or with a small group. Ideally, workshop instruction finishes with a whole class reflection to reinforce the learning for the day as well as address successes and challenges students experienced. If you have questions about the model, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or inquire with the classroom teacher.

Exciting Library Updates! Due to the terrific response for library books, we will be adding more Lemon Road pick up opportunities and a brand new library return box! Families can now visit Library Door #5 on Mondays between 4:00-5:30 (except student holidays) to pick up books from a self-serve cart. If you don’t receive a text/email confirming your child’s books are ready, be sure to contact Ms. Burke before you arrive. All book orders should be placed no later than the Friday before pick up. We have also added a brand new library return box now available at Library Door #5 to return books at your convenience. Please note, books returned in the library return box will be isolated for 7 days before check in. If you have any questions, contact Ms. Gabby Burke, 703-714-6447 or goburke@fcps.edu. Ready…set…READ!

In order that your child may be better prepared for virtual art classes, please check the “Art” tab in the Lemon Road Blackboard site. Clicking on this tab will direct you to grade level tabs which will then direct you to lessons, timelines and required materials. Thank you for all of your support! |
On Monday, students will begin learning about creativity in their Monday Morning Meetings. For a 1-page character card overview, click here. Creativity means you come up with new and original ideas to think about and do things. Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences, and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They generate lots of different ideas and can pursue them with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you share your original ideas with the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.

LRES PTA is happy to announce that Virginia Science Olympiad has decided to host the Science Olympiad, Div. A and Div. B, competitions will be virtual and therefore some topics may not be available.
Div. B (Grade 6 only) has confirmed their competition dates (Jan 30 and Feb 6) and which one we will be assigned to LRES teams will be based on how fast we submit our registration and details.
