Learning Seminar Overview -

Week of October 26

Next week in Learning Seminar we will be delivering an important lesson where we ask students to “Imagine a World Without Hate.” In the 2019-20 school year, Twain was designated as a No Place for Hate School. Among the many individual and schoolwide designations we’ve received throughout the years, this one is special. It means that we are taking action to make our school one in which ANYONE can feel safe and accepted. In Wednesday’s lesson, we will discuss some specific heroes (Martin Luther King, Jr., Harvey Milk, Yitzhak Rabin, and many more) and we will discuss how their lives (though drastically cut short) have made imprints on our society that reverberate to this day. We’ll conclude the lesson by showing a short video that envisions a world in which the heroes we have spotlighted were given the opportunity to live on. The video is played with John Lennon’s Imagine playing in the background and is quite moving. Students will also be invited to join the No Place for Hate Committee.

Conversation starter at home: Watch the video and share your reaction with your child. Perhaps there are memories you have or stories that were shared with you about the heroes featured in the clip that can further enrich the powerful lives these people lived. If your student expresses an interest in joining the No Place for Hate Committee you can email or have your student email Mrs. Melissa Montgomery at MLMontgomery@fcps.edu.
