A Message from Ms. Jankovich

Dear Sangster Families -

I hope that everyone had a good week and has something fun planned for the weekend.  As I have said many times, find as many opportunities as you can to put the technology away and get outside! It’s almost hard to believe that it’s time to get out the rake and lawn bags, but I must practice what I preach.  😊

I know that you have many questions about the instructional delivery model for in-person teaching and learning at Sangster. We can now share that FCPS will begin implementing a concurrent model of instruction beginning with our Kindergarten students on November 16, 2020, followed by grades 1 & 2 on November 30, 2020, and grades 3 – 6 on January 4, 2021.  I will be scheduling evening Office Hours soon where more information will be shared with you about the concurrent model.  Stay tuned for those links, dates, and times.

In July, you were asked to select a preference of virtual or in-person learning for your child.  If your July preference remains the same, there is nothing further you need to do.  If your family situation has changed since July, you will have the opportunity to communicate that change with us.  More general information regarding the concurrent model and directions on how to change your child’s preference will be sent out in an e-notify message on Monday, October 26.

Please know that the staff, Ms. Redford, and I know what a challenging year this has been for our students as well as you.  While we know another transition is on the horizon, please know that we are going to continue to support you and do everything we can to make this next step as easy as possible for our students.

Thank you again for all you do.

Sincerely,

Ms. Jankovich

Meal kits will be available for pick up from 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., or until supplies are exhausted.  All meals are available at no-cost to FCPS students and children eighteen (18) years of age and under.  Parents/caregivers may pick up for children and adults may purchase kits for $28.00.

More information is available online or by calling the Office of Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800.

Sign up for Paperless Progress Reports

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all elementary school parents to allow parents to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of School Year 2020-21. Choosing this option will not impact any mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for elementary school students and report cards for secondary students.  The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian selects “Go Paperless” for one of their students, the option will apply to all other siblings.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians must log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless".  All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports.

If you do not have a ParentVue Account, please contact our Registrar, Marian Hoelscher, at mthoelscher@fcps.edu.

Positivity Project

This year, Sangster will continue implementing the Positivity Project (P2). P2 is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build strong relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. Every 1-2 weeks, students learn about a new character strength.

It is easier than ever for Sangster families to access P2 resources this year! The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Positivity Project - Week of October 18

This week’s character strength is Forgiveness. This means that you accept that people make mistakes and forgive those who have done wrong. Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective.

Sangster Library e-Books

Did you know that Sangster students can access over a thousand new and popular e-Book titles?  Students simply log in to MackinVIA through their computer or other personal device using the website/app.  The weblink and video tutorials can be found on our Sangster Library homepage, which will require an FCPS Google login: https://tinyurl.com/sangsterlibrary.  All links can also be found on our public Sangster site under the "Library" tab.

Please contact our librarian, Nicole Oberdick at neoberdick@fcps.edu with any questions. Happy reading!

Fairfax County Public Library - LEAP Program

Effective October 1, all FCPS students (preK-12) can check out materials from the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), even if they don’t have a traditional library card or a card has been blocked due to fines.

Under the Library Equity Access Pass program (LEAP), a partnership with FCPS and FCPL, students need only their name, not a physical library card, to check out three items at a time for six weeks each (no renewals). LEAP accounts are never charged fines or fees.

LEAP image

A student can have a LEAP account in addition to a standard library account. Standard accounts allow users to place holds on materials and access FCPL’s digital resources, such as eBooks and databases.

Families can apply for a standard account online and in library branches

FCPS Cares

The FCPS Cares Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can acknowledge our Sangster staff members.
