CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

I want to acknowledge the many different emotions you may be experiencing as discussions for returning to in-person learning in FCPS continue. Whether or not you intend to continue full-time virtual learning this year, you may be wondering what the transition over the next few months might mean for your child. You may feel impatient or frustrated, anxious or apprehensive, eager or confused about what is best for your children and family as we plan for in-person learning against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many health and safety protocols have been developed, questions about instructional delivery discussed on October 15 remain. Consider exploring these FCPS resources:

The FCPS School Board approved a tentative timeline for some elementary students to return to school at the October 15 meeting. Certain CWES special education students and kindergartners will be eligible for in-person learning the week of November 16 and grades 1-2, the week of November 30. The January 4 tentative return date for grades 3-6 will be discussed further at the School Board's November 12 meeting.

In my Parent Coffee tomorrow morning, Monday, October 19, at 8:00 AM, we will process information currently available together and talk about next steps for CWES. Your perspectives and priorities are important to us as we prepare for a safe return for CWES students. I am eager to solicit your questions and concerns as we enter this next phase of planning for 2020-2021.

As we are likely to receive additional FCPS communications and guidance over the coming week, I will hold a CWES Q&A about Return to School on Monday, October 26 at 6:30 PM to share updates. I encourage you to submit your questions about Return to School to inform our plans for this meeting.

As always, I truly value your partnership and support.

Warm regards,

First Equity Book Talk a Success!

paige

Eighty participants joined us for our first Equity Book Talk last week! We were floored by our students' thoughtful questions for young authors, Nalani and Leila Butler, after they read, "Paige Saves the Day" to our students. Visit their website to enjoy a video trailer of the book and/or to purchase your own copy (book is also available on Amazon.com): https://www.thebookbutler.com/

We will invite them back when the Paige sequel is released! Be on the lookout for our next Equity Book Talk for students. If you are interested in supporting the work of our equity team, please contact CWES Equity Lead, Mona Mouneimne at mmmouneimne@fcps.edu.
