Departing Thoughts

As I sit here typing what will be my last PTA Newsletter, I can’t help but reflect on some of the amazing things we have been able to accomplish these past two years. With the assistance of our business partner, Church of the Apostles, we were able to host two Willow Welcome events allowing our students and their families an opportunity to socialize and reconnect after a long summer of being separated. We introduced a new volunteer program called 3 For Me that enabled our families to volunteer their time and talents that didn’t make them feel discouraged or overwhelmed. We kicked off the Watch DOGS program that allowed our dads or male role models an opportunity to get into the school and interact with our teachers and students. We continued to sponsor all our time-honored clubs, from Chess Club to Running Club and Math Club to Jump Rope. We reinitiated the Garden Club to teach our students about the environment and allow them to raise their vegetables! We formed a Science Club led by Fairfax High School students to help our 5th graders experiment with science a little more before their first Science SOL. We hosted a Leprechaun Chase, which saw our favorite principal reach into his bag of tricks and draw out his inner Irishman while cheering our families on to the finish line. We also hosted a Boosterthon where that same principal kissed a pig to help us raise enough money to replace the water fountains in the main lobby and the cafeteria with water bottle refill stations and purchase a new electronic marquee to replace our old, broken-down sign off Braddock Road. We hosted several Spirit Nights, Restaurant Nights, Movie Nights, the World Festival, and the Silent Auction. We created terrific yearbooks that will forever remind our students of the fabulous memories they made at Willow Springs. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

Not even one of these accomplishments would have happened without our amazing volunteers. Our students, parents, teachers, and administrators went above and beyond at every turn to see our visions become realities. Your selfless dedication to our school made our burdens light no matter how heavy the load appeared. I wish I could reach out to each of you to let you know how much I appreciate your support. From every parent that served alongside me on the PTA Board to every teacher that encouraged their students to participate in one of our PTA sponsored activities, I thank you. It was an honor to serve alongside each volunteer that supported a club, hosted an event, or patiently waited for me to finish using one of the copiers. I appreciate every room parent, cafeteria volunteer, and picture day helper. It takes hundreds of volunteers to make a school the size of Willow Springs function smoothly, and I appreciate every one of you. As I transition my efforts to helping Noelle navigate the virtual halls of Lanier Middle School, please know that I am still walking alongside you with my Kindergartener, Faith. We have seven more years together, and I look forward to every one of them!!

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you!

Marci Sackie

2018-2020 PTA President

We need our Fox Families to join the Willow Springs PTA!

Our WSES PTA is where teachers and families work together to create an environment providing best experiences for all of our children. This is a way of "meeting" other families and community members in this virtual start of school and provide avenues to volunteer for our school.

Save the Date: Cozymeal Online Cooking Class: Cookies for Kids

Discover the joy of baking as your kids learn how to make comforting homemade cookies.  Just in time for Valentine’s Day, PTA is excited to host its’ first online cooking class fundraiser with Cozymeal.

In this fun and interactive baking class, kids will learn how to make their very own cookies. Chef Angela will share two simple and straightforward recipes that kids can prepare while parents assist with the oven. Little bakers will gain confidence in the kitchen and discover how baking cookies can bring just as much pleasure as eating them!

The class is scheduled for Friday, February 12th, 2021.   Early bird registration starts 10/9 at https://www.cozymeal.com/online-cooking-class/14378/willow-springs-fundraising-cookies-for-kids.  Be sure to mark your calendars (and save a cookie for the PTA)!
