Message from the Principal

Principal Theresa Khuluki

Dear Wolftrap Families,

I know that you have many questions regarding the information discussed at the School Board meeting last Thursday concerning returning to school. If you have not seen the presentation, you can find it here. The School Board approved a return date for kindergarten of November 16 and a return date for Grades 1 and 2 of November 30. Please know that I plan on hosting a parent coffee as soon as I have learned more information about the implementation of this proposed plan from county leadership. I will send separate communication about this parent coffee including an RSVP form so that I can provide the link to the meeting with registered parents.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki
Principal

AAP Information

Thank you to those who attended the Grades 2—6 Level IV AAP Screening Information Session on Wednesday, October 14th at 5:00. Please click on the following link to view the recording of the session: https://us.bbcollab.com/recording/08e5345885dd4f4c94956401aeb5fff2

Also, please refer to this parent document as the “parent cheat sheet” referred to multiple times in the recording: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vKaOvfRpYkBwv3Oq9WtckZuIZHhRb3hR/view?usp=sharing

Score Reports for iReady testing

The online iReady assessment (also known as the universal screener) provides an initial view of all students’ foundational skills to help teachers identify students who may have challenges in reading or mathematics. As you know, students in grades K-6 have been taking the iReady reading assessment. Students in grades 1-6 have also been taking the math assessment. The testing window is established to provide a framework of time when testing can be completed. This year, we will be mailing test reports during the week of November 2nd, after the window has closed. Please look for those reports to arrive the following week. If you have any questions about test results, or if you do not receive your score report, please contact your child’s teacher.

Playground Use

There have been concerns communicated to the office regarding use of the playground. Please see the following guidelines that were published on June 12. The link is provided here: https://www.fcps.edu/news/fcps-reopen-basketball-courts-and-playgrounds-accordance-phase-2-guidelines

Reopening on June 12 will be:

  •  Athletic fields (for organized and permitted use, based on Virginia and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines pertaining to use of athletic fields).
  •  Basketball courts (maintaining 10 feet of physical distance, based on Virginia guidelines).
  •  Playgrounds – Playgrounds will open systemwide. There is no special cleaning of playground equipment; visitors use at their own risk and must adhere to social distancing guidelines.

All openings are based on CDC guidelines, state mandates, and guidance from local health officials.

Currently, those using the playground space need to please adhere to social distancing guidelines. As always, while we love dogs, they are not allowed on school property, due to health department guidelines. This is specifically stated on the signs located on the property, as are the guidelines regarding health and Covid 19. Please assist us in following the guidelines.

Madison Pyramid Canned Food Drive

In cooperation with the Madison High School SGA, the Madison Pyramid schools will be conducting a canned food drive beginning on Monday, November 9th. A box will be placed outside Door 1 for community members to drop off cans M-F, 8am-4pm. The canned food drive will end on December 14th. These donations will directly support our community, and we are hoping to help as many families as we can!

A Couple of Reminders

“Go Paperless” Progress Report Option Now Available

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all ES parents to allow you to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of SY 20/21. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards for secondary students. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless" All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

Attendance

FCPS has a policy in place for how its schools are to document attendance in order to be in compliance with Virginia state law. Wolftrap adheres to the FCPS attendance policy which defines the following:

Excused Tardies and Absences

Unexcused Tardies and Absences

Illness of the student

Death in the family

Doctor or dental appointment

Religious observances

Family vacations

Child care situations

Missed school bus/overslept

Non-school-related activities

Wofltrap PTA
pta

We have achieved a total of 28 days of school, five Connections, two PTA meetings, two major PTA events and kicked off a brand new flamingo fundraiser and community activity, Random Acts of Kindness (see Facebook and our website for the latest here). The PTA is moving! Our committees and volunteers are doing great work and thinking innovatively this year. Our PTA volunteers work hard not only to host great events but also because the result enables the PTA to support our school. With our fundraising from last year, the PTA purchased Lexia, Dreambox, all the manipulatives the school sent for every child during virtual learning, document cameras for our teachers, NoRedInk (a web-based writing platform), and Mini-Qs historical studies for our grades. All contributions make a difference! Join us today here!

Flamingo fundraiser

It's been little over a month since we launched the WES PTA flock. Our flocking manager reports we have completed over 37 flockings across our community and have 47 flockings booked! The WES community has named 33 flamingos! Our flamingo friends have creative names such as Giselle, Sassafras, Mr. FlimFlam, and our favorite Mrs. Birdett! The full names are now available on our website here. This flock is making families smile, bringing joy and a wonderful sea of pink to lawns.

A new flamingo?! What?! Stay on the lookout! A new flamingo has decided to momentarily join the flock during the rest of October.

Order your flocking and naming today! There are still dates in December available for booking and seven more flamingos to name! Flock and/or name flamingos today here.

Cultural Arts Assembly

This fall, we're delighted to host Vienna-based Music School 21 for our Cultural Arts Assembly. The performance How Do We Make Music? was designed specifically for our Wolftrap students. Ally & Pally are a dynamic duo of extraordinary educators and stars of the revolutionary Music FUNdamentals™ online video course. By joining the virtual assembly, our Wolftrap students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of rhythm and melody. Students will use movement and gesture to engage in an interactive musical experience and will work together to develop music about Wolftrap Elementary! If you'd like to learn more about Music School 21, please visit https://musicschool21.com/

Please note the dates and times for each grade below. The assembly is a PTA sponsored event using the PTA Google Meets which is not a FCPS virtual platform. To participate, parents need to sign up using the Google Forms below to receive the link the night before the assembly.

Yearbook - Calling all Wolftrap Parents!

camera

Since our students are home, we need your help this year to continue our annual tradition of creating a Yearbook for our students. Please help us collect photos of our students by emailing them to yearbook@wolftrappta.org.

Please include the student's name and teacher's name in the email to help us identify everyone. We would love to see photos of your children at virtual events and at their workspaces/doing schoolwork.

PTA Virtual Volunteer Social Hour

volunteer

Volunteering is so fulfilling because no job is ever too small, help is always welcome and working together we really do achieve more. We would love your input, skills, expertise, guidance, and/or participation to continue to make Wolftrap PTA programs successful for our elementary school community!

Grab your favorite beverage and join us   for a virtual Volunteer Social Hour on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 PM. Play games, meet other parents and learn how you can help with some of the cool new programs the PTA has developed this year or help support the creative twists we are putting on tried-and-true programs we all already know and love.

Don’t forget to sign up! If you have any questions in advance reach out to presidentelect@wolftrappta.org.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Bingo Night was a Success!

Bingo

Thanks to all who participated in our annual Bingo Night tradition on Friday night. While this year might have been a different format, we still had the same enthusiasm and excitement, and it was so fun to see so many children smiling and having fun. A special thank you to our Wolftrap teachers and staff who took time from their Friday nights to make special guest appearances as Bingo callers.
