As many of you may know, the latest school board meeting was filled with updates about the Return to School plan.
As the details of that meeting become available, you can find them on the FCPS Return to School site for the latest information
We are looking forward to some of our students returning to school in the coming weeks (JROTC, Culinary Arts, ELL, and CAT B students).
Families of those students have been contacted.
Please note the following:
- Students who ride a bus will soon receive information on where and when your student may pick up the bus. Temperatures will be taken before students will be permitted to board the bus.
- On or after Oct. 20, parents whose students are scheduled to start Oct 26 will be able to complete the Parent Health Screening Commitment form. This form will be available in SIS via Parent View.
Arriving at School
- Bus riders will be dropped off at the Rock, at Door 4
- Students who drive or who walk to school may enter through Door 4 or 6
- Student who are being dropped off to school may enter through Door 6
- All students will have their temperature taken when they arrive at school.
- Students whose parents have not completed the Health Screening form will also be required to fill out a Daily Health Screening form before attending classes
Students are required to wear masks during the day.
Please call the Attendance Office 703-619-3100; Choose 1 for English or 2 for Spanish, next select Option 1 for Attendance Line, and then choose the class your student is in 2021, 2022, 2023, or 2024 to report an absence for any reason.
Please be sure to leave the following:
- student’s name,
- spelling the last name, given first name (no nicknames please);
- student ID;
- reason for any full or partial absence;
- your name and relationship to the student; and
- a phone number where you can be reached.
In addition, all attendance absences for illness MUST include the following. Please indicate whether your child has any of the following symptoms:
- Feeling feverish or chills
- Fever greater than or equal to 100.4 F
- Headache (not due to another health condition, hunger, menstrual cramps, stress, or injury)
- A new cough (not due to another health condition)
- Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties (not due to diagnosed respiratory condition or if different than normal pattern of chronic condition)
- A new sore throat (not due to another health condition)
- Congestion or runny nose (not related to allergies or health condition)
- Fatigue (more tired than normal or sudden onset)
- New muscle pain (not due to another health condition or that may have been caused by a specific activity such as physical exercise))
- New loss of taste, smell, or appetite
- Abdominal pain (not due to hunger, constipation, injury, or stress)
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
If this information is not provided, FCPS staff MUST contact parents/guardians of any student who has been called in as sick without an explanation.
Please note, students, friends, siblings, other relatives or friends cannot call to excuse any absence, it must be a parent/guardian. If your student attends an academy class, please call that academy school if the attendance affects their academy class.
Since 2016, Food For Neighbors (FFN) has been providing holiday meals to families in middle and high schools throughout Fairfax and Loudoun counties. Please consider making a donation that would allow a family in our area to enjoy Thanksgiving as well. Holiday meals are a special time when families come together. This year, FCPS is holding a Virtual College Week October 19th-23rd instead of the traditional College Fair and College Night activities. Students and their parents may participate in one or all of several live virtual sessions.
Participants will learn about the current college admissions process and how to be better prepared for the next chapter of their educational journey.
Advance registration is required. You will receive a unique access link 24 hours before the event(s) that you register to attend.
The George Mason University ¡Alcanza! College Fair is being held virtually this year on October 22, 2020. This event promotes higher education opportunities to Latinx high school students.

Digital Citizenship Week (October 19th –23rd) is upon us! Our focus for this year is “How Am I Being a Digital Citizen today?” Students, staff and the MVHS community will engage with this topic and more. We hope the information we will be sharing will better prepare our students for their digital needs of today and for tomorrow.

Did you know that October is National Substance Abuse Prevention month? According to the latest data from the VA Department of Health, there is an overdose of opioids nationally every 20 minutes AND there is a 9.4% increase in deaths from overdoses. Opioids can come in the form of prescription medications (Vicodin, Percocet, Morphine, etc.), heroin, and fentanyl (VA Department of Health, 2020).
Some signs of potential opioid use are: track marks on the arms, talking quickly and incoherently, losing interest in activities, sleeping at odd hours, dilated pupils, drowsiness/confusion, constipation, slowed breathing, and sleeping/eating more than usual (VA Department of Health, 2020). Parents can help reduce substance abuse in their children/teens by having a good relationship and strong bond with their child, talking about the dangers of drugs, monitor use of prescription medications, and getting treatment immediately if substance use is indicated. For treatment for substance abuse concerns, you can reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.

In this event, you can bring unwanted/expired/unused prescription medications for free, safe disposal.
