Good-bye and Welcome

This week we say good by to our part-time counselor, Cari Allen. She will now be able to be full-time at Coates ES. We are grateful for all she has done for the students, staff, and community at Cub Run and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. We’d like to welcome Cammie Terry as our new part-time counselor. We are thrilled that Cammie has returned to Cub Run in this new role. We also want to welcome, Tracey Wrighten, Public Health Assistant, that will be working with our preschool and kindergarten teams.

Scoliosis Fact Sheet

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often in children during the growth spurt just before puberty. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, however, some children have more severe spinal deformities that continue to get worse as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. Treatment may include bracing or surgery.

Supporting Your Child’s Learning

While we still need your support of your child’s learning, you can help your child by encouraging more independence. As we move forward, please let your child think, interact, respond and answer questions on their own. It’s very difficult for teachers to know what students need to learn if parents are over their shoulder, answering questions and typing in the chat. We want our students to thrive, and that can only happen if you give them the opportunity to work hard independently and even make mistakes. This is really important when students are participating in an assessment.

Next Round of Monday Morning Club Opportunities (Optional for Students)

Starting on Monday, October 26, students will have the opportunity to participate in a new round of various enrichment activities. There will again be three time blocks in the morning with different options to choose from during each block. Descriptions for the next round of options (some new, some repeats) are below and the detailed schedule can be found on the sign-up form.  Students who register by the end of the day, Thursday, 10/22, will receive an invitation to join (by the teacher of the club) in-time for the start of the new sessions on Monday, 10/26.  Sign-ups received after Thursday, 10/22 will have to wait until the following week.  Please sign-up via the following form as soon as possible: https://forms.gle/8yLWbRrnsPxaU1vx5

***Students who have received an individual invitation from a teacher to attend another small group opportunity, may not sign up for a Club that occurs during that same session time.

Art Club (with Ms. Brock) will be focused on “How to Draw Anything!”  Students will begin with learning a step-by-step drawing process together.  They can then choose to finish the first drawing, or to learn more step-by-step drawing processes from a resource slide featuring that day's theme.

Band Club (with Mr. Holscher) remains open to 5th & 6th Grade students as an opportunity to reinforce skills learned in class.

Jump Rope Club (with Mr. Dofflemyer) is for students who love to exercise (JUMP!) and want to improve their health.

Music Club (with Ms. Milroy) will offer the following options:

- Chorus is for 5th/6th Grade students who are interested in working together to create music. Students will practice songs as a group, record themselves, and then Mrs. Milroy will put the recordings together to create a virtual chorus.

- ‘Recorder Clubs’ (separate sessions for 3rd/4th Grade and 5th/6th Grade) are for students who are interested in getting a head start on recorder for the year. Make sure that you have your recorder for the first day!

Reading Club (with Mr. Timpson) is for students who love to read and want to talk about what they are reading.

Strings Club (with Ms. Jimenez) remains open to 4th-6th Grade students as an opportunity to work on extracurricular music of different genres, while reinforcing skills learned in class.  The 5th & 6th Grade Beginner Strings sessions will continue for students who previously enrolled.

Safe Routes to School Walking Wednesdays

FCPS Safe Routes to School in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaign will be promoting Walking Wednesdays during the 2020-2021 school year to encourage physical activity.  Principals are encouraged to share the information below with their communities.

Walking Wednesdays is a county-wide community program designed to promote physical and mental health. FCPS Safe Routes to School in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaign encourages students and parents/guardians to take time each Wednesday to walk and connect with friends, neighbors and classmates before the school day and workday begins.  Whether your walk takes you around the block, to the bus stop, or to your school, we hope you will find others out walking and can greet one another from a distance.

Walking Wednesdays will kick off on October 7, 2020, which is International Walk to School Day.  Coming in November will be Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 18, 2020.

More information about Walking Wednesdays can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/safety-and-transportation/transportation-services/safe-routes-school-srts.

Families, neighborhoods or schools can register their participation in International Walk to School Day on October 7, 2020 at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/registration/

The Positivity Project

This week Cub Run has been learning about OPM: BEING PRESENT AND GIVING OTHERS MY ATTENTION.

Next week, we will begin learning about FORGIVENESS. Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured, and

allowing yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you.

Parent Consent for Select Digital Resources -PLEASE COMPLETE!

At Cub Run, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families.  Some of the digital resources that your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used.

You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://cubrunes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources  While your child may not use all of the tools listed on our website, our list includes any tools that our teachers at Cub Run may use which need parental permission.  There are other tools that will be used which do not require parent consent.

Included on this page is also a link to the form where you need to indicate whether or not your child is allowed to use the listed digital resources this year.  This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.  We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about any digital resources that may be used this year.

Cub Run-a-Thon Information

The Cub Run-a-Thon is the PTA's major fundraiser and supports our PTA all year long! This year is going to look a little different - but the PTA still needs your support to keep the organization going through 2020. Join us for a virtual fun-run on November 2nd! Our total school fundraising goal for 2020 is $10,000. You can help to make this goal by having your child raise $20! This is a smaller amount than in years past, but it is the minimum we need to raise to continue to give support to our PTA and teachers during our distance learning adventures.
