Principal's Message
Hughes Students and Families,
On October 30th our First Quarter grading period ends and parents will be able to view report card grades in SIS ParentVUE on Saturday, November 9th. You can opt to “Go Paperless” in ParentVUE and receive only online report cards. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the report cards. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless" All parents who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed report cards. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level.
If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to have immediate access to the grades. Through ParentVUE, you can also monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
Our staff is here to support parents who need to access their SIS ParentVUE accounts. Please see the links below to get you for SIS support.

Free and Reduced Lunch and Consent to Share
If you submitted an application for Free or Reduced-Price Meals last school year for your child(ren), please remember to submit a new application for this school year. The current eligibility status will expire on October 20, 2020.
Apply for free and reduced-price meals by visiting www.MySchoolApps.com. Eligibility may also provide your child(ren) other important benefits. Be sure your child(ren) are approved for the 20-21 school year.
The online application is available in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, Tagalog, French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean. Paper applications are available to complete and submit in English upon request at FCPS food distribution sites.
Consent to Share Information form
It is very important that families also complete the Consent to Share Information form so that students may also receive free or reduced fees for several programs (e.g. course fees). Without this form, students will not be eligible for free/reduced fees in a number of programs even if they are eligible for the meals program.
The form is available in nine languages on the same webpage. Please scroll to the bottom of the webpage to find the form.
If you have already completed the Free/Reduced Meals application but did not do the Consent to Share Information form, you can still do so

SEL Lessons:
This year, we have implemented an emphasis on Social Emotional Learning. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students understand and manage emotions, establish, and maintain positive relationships, set, and achieve positive goals, and make responsible decisions. Research shows that a systemic approach to SEL intentionally cultivates a caring, participatory, and equitable learning environment and infuses SEL throughout all aspects of the school day.
Twice a week, students will participate in a “Connections” lesson during Period 3. The focus of the lessons rotates to include: Social-Emotional Learning, POWER, AVID, IBMYP and Digital Citizenship. So far, students have created a SMART Goal in Naviance, learned about effective communication (how to send a proper email), how to seek out help, learned about student’s rights and responsibilities, and how to obtain service-learning hours. We will continue to provide lessons on relationship skills, managing stress and anxiety, showing empathy and kindness to others as well as a multitude of other lessons; lessons will be archived on the Student Services Google Site.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s school counselor. For more Student Services information or updates, visit our Google Site (must use student’s fcpsschools login).
Internet Assistance:
Cox’s Connect2Compete and Comcast’s Xfinity Internet Essentials Programs provide low-cost internet to families that are enrolled in a government subsidy program (National School Lunch Program, housing assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others). If your family needs Internet service at home so that your student can participate in virtual learning, please contact your child’s school counselor to begin the application process.
