Message from Mrs. Castillo

Polo Day

Thank you to all our parents who helped their children rock their Lemon Road spirit wear Friday! The PTA is thrilled to announce a spirit wear sale this month. Check out the virtual store and stock up!

We will continue our Freaky Friday tradition when the SCA will vote and announce a theme for this day – typically Freaky Fridays are the last Friday of each month. We also have a monthly spirit day where we encourage all students and staff to wear their Lemon Road polos or other spirit wear. We typically host those on the second Friday of each month. The next Freaky Friday will be October 30.

Our PTA will be sharing a survey about Science Olympiad soon. If you aren’t receiving their emails, please reach out to the PTA directly here: lemonroadpta@gmail.com.

FCPS recognizes Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, October 12 as a student holiday. There will be no live lessons or asynchronous work assigned to the students. Teachers will be engaged in professional learning and planning for the next month of instruction.

Enjoy the end of this fall weekend! ~ Mrs. Castillo

Math Competitions

Math Counts

Typically the Math Club (grades 3-6) meets weekly throughout the school year to prepare for several group and individual competitions. Because we are unable to host Math Club meetings this school year, we wanted to extend some of the opportunities to interested families. If you are looking for resources to further the kind of thinking these competitions offer, check out these publicly available Problems of the Week from Math Counts.

MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competitions (Grade 6 only)

This competition for middle school math students (6-8) will be held on a specific date in February each year. This year they are allowing student to compete in the chapter competitions without a school affiliation. Find registration and competition information here.  Early registration ends October 30.

Math Olympiad (Grades 4-6)

Math Olympiad is allowing virtual teams to enter but only through a MOEMS® Institute Team. An Institute Team may only be run out of a storefront, weekend, or after-school learning center.  Parents may find more information here.

AMC 8 (Grades 4-6)

AMC 8 is not offering virtual competitions this year. Similar to Math Olympiad, AMC8 may only be hosted by an educational organization. Find more information about who can register at this link.

LRES Library Books

Library

Has your child placed books on hold for pick up either at school or one of our bus stops? Curbside checkout is underway. We had about 70 families stop by Lemon Road last Monday and on October 19th, a bus will bring checked out books to the intersection of Pimmet Drive and Matera Street from 2:00 – 2:30 PM. Use this survey to let Ms. Burke know where your family prefers to pick up books.  Email Ms. Burke (goburke@fcps.edu) for questions or information.

Positivity Project: Being Present and Giving Others our Attention

Being Present

This OPM element means that when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention. A deliberate focus on being present is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the formidable capacity to pull us away from the present moment and what’s most important – our relationships with other people. How dangerous is this to our well-being and the fabric of our society? Very.
