Principal's Note

Hello Families,

Cameron’s Wellness Team members are listed below. The team is committed and dedicated to support our school community. Please reach out to them if you need assistance related to social and emotional learning or resources.

I am Porscha Baker the School Social Worker.  I have been at Cameron Elementary School for about five years.  As the school social worker, I am able to provide families with community resources, provide support to students within a group or individually.  I also support families during crisis providing information on resources or directing through processes to gain additional support.  Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.  I can be reached at pjbaker@fcps.edu

I am Jaynie Van Sant the new school psychologist who will be working with you this year. I have worked in the greater DC area for the past 10 years and starting my 3rd year with FCPS. I am excited to meet you all and work with the students at Cameron as I have heard such great things! In my role as school psychologist I am able to support students through consultation with you and their families to develop a plan to best meet their social-emotional needs. I can work with students individually or in small groups, as well as push into your classroom to help with SEL this year. I support families with accessing resources and navigating the special education process by completing psychological assessments and explaining testing results. I’m sure I will meet many of you through local screening, IEP and MTSS meetings. You can reach me at ajvansant@fcps.edu.

I am Lisa Heath the School Counselor. This is my 26th year teaching and my 3rd as a Counselor at Cameron.  I support students in their classroom setting and in small groups to develop skills to make and keep friends, understand and manage emotions, set academic and personal goals and many other life-skill topics. I can be reached at lpheath@fcps.edu or CameronESCounselors@fcps.edu. I look forward to working with you closely this year to support the students at Cameron

Our Wellness Team members are committed to supporting our families. Please do not be reluctant to reach out during this challenging time. We need our parents to understand that we will work with you and be flexible around meeting students’ needs.

Thank you,

Eric T. Johnson

Principal

Parent / Teacher Conferences

PTC

As we near the end of the 1st quarter, teachers will be reaching out to you to schedule a parent teacher conference.  These will be especially important this year as teachers will share information about your child’s participation and progress in distance learning that may not be easy to capture in a progress report.   This is also an important opportunity for setting goals to help make the learning most successful.

Book Character Fun Day October 30th

cd

We are pleased to announce the Cameron Book Character Fun Day will be held virtually on Friday, October 30th. This is a school-wide event where students, as well as teachers, are encouraged to dress as their favorite book character.

Students should not dress in scary costumes or wear masks.  All character costumes should connect to a book. Following Cameron’s tradition our principal, Mr. Johnson, will end the event with a read aloud of a special story online. The video presentation link will be shared at a later date.

We would love to see your BOOtiful faces!

See you there,

Ms. Thomas                                                Ms. Lanier

USDA Is Providing Free Meals for Students (Breakfast And Lunch) Every Day Until December 31st

USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that FCPS and other school districts can continue serving free meals to all children through December 31. FCPS has distributed more than 3.1 million grab and go meals since schools closed in March. The goal is to provide every FCPS student daily access to a nutritious breakfast and lunch.

Buses are delivering grab and go meals throughout the county. Several new bus routes have been added and some bus stop locations have changed. Any changes to bus routes are posted on the website by 5 p.m. each day. Meals on buses will be distributed Monday through Friday beginning at 6:30 a.m. Information about bus routes for food distribution is available online.

Grab and go service hours at school sites have been extended to 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) with both breakfast and lunch being served at the same time.

Please Note: Breakfast and lunch meals for Saturdays and Sundays are now being distributed at all sites and bus routes each Friday.

No Meals ON Nov 3rd

Many schools will be used as polling places on November 3rd, Food and Nutrition Services will not be providing meal service on Election Day. They will provide two days-worth of meals on November 2nd. This is very similar to how they distribute weekend meals on Fridays.

ST Math

ST Math

Encourage your child to access ST Math at home during asynchronous learning times.  In ST Math, the puzzles start of simple and then get more challenging as your child progresses.  When your child reaches a challenging problem, he or she may ask for help. To find the ST Math link visit the Student Resource page at Cameron ES.

To help them, ask questions like:

  • What do you notice about the puzzle?
  • What can you click?
  • What can you do to get JiJi across the screen?
  • What question is this puzzle asking?
  • Describe the strategy you are going to use?
  • Describe what you see after you click.  What did you learn?
  • What will you do now? What do you expect to see?
  • What did you learn from the previous level that can help you here?

Book Fair In November

clif

The Scholastic book fair is coming November 9th – November 22nd this year!

Parents/Guardians and students, the Scholastic Book Fair will be online starting Monday, November 9th through Sunday, November 22nd.  You can order

books from home and your purchases will be sent directly to you.  That’s right-your books will be sent to the address you requested.  More information to come soon. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Lanier, Cameron’s librarian, at allanier@fcps.edu.

Leap

Effective October 1, all FCPS students (preK-12) are able to check out materials from the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), even if they don’t have a traditional library card or a card has been blocked due to fines.

Under the Library Equity Access Pass program (LEAP), a partnership with FCPS and FCPL, students need only their name, not a physical library card, to check out three items at a time for six weeks each (no renewals). LEAP accounts are never charged fines or fees.

A student can have a LEAP account in addition to a standard library account. Standard accounts allow users to place holds on materials and access FCPL’s digital resources, such as eBooks and databases.

Families can apply for a standard account online and in library branches
