Dear Willow Springs families,

Thank you to everyone that ordered Panera for our Family Restaurant Night. It was a fantastic turnout and great to see so many smiling faces at curbside to go. We are thankful to our families and dedicated PTA for helping us continue to build relationships with families and strengthen our community.

This week our AAP information session was facilitated by Sandy Guidice-Murray, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher. She provided information and resources about the continuum of services proudly offered at Willow Springs. Please see below for more information and upcoming dates.

First-quarter grading ends on October 30th. Students will not receive an interim report; all parents will have an opportunity to have a conference with their child’s teacher. If you have not already set up your conference time, please contact your child’s teacher.

In honor of Indigenous People’s Day, students will have a four day week as this Monday, October 12th, is a staff development day for FCPS and a student holiday for students. We look forward to engaging in professional development and ensuring that we continue to provide meaningful and rigorous instruction.

Be sure to follow us on twitter @WSESfox.

Enjoy your long weekend,

Dylan Taylor, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Ipsa Stringer, Assistant Principal

Curbside Library Book Pickup

Our next library curbside pickup is on Monday, October 19th. All holds (up to 5) for this curbside pickup should be placed by Thursday, October 15th. A how-to video is also available on your child’s Library Landing Page (in your child’s Google Classroom) or can be seen by clicking here. Email notices are sent out to students’ fcpsschools.net accounts (Grades 3-6) or sent out to parents (Grades K-2) on the Friday before the event, at which point the family will sign up for a time slot to pick up books. The library is happy to make other arrangements if the date/time does not work for your family. We will get the books to whoever needs them! All books can be returned at the families’ convenience by dropping them in the library return bin at the front of the school. All returned books will  be quarantined for 7 days before the materials will be handled. Please email Amy Hurley (achurley@fcps.edu) or Jean Naka (jmnaka@fcps.edu) if you have any questions.

Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP)

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP)  provides actionable information that will assist teachers, leaders, and parents/guardians in supporting student success in school and to better understand school readiness skills across the state of Virginia. This fall your student will participate in the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) component of the Virginia Kindergarten readiness program. The CBRS rating scale is used for both self-regulation and social skills and is completed after 3-4 weeks of observation. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program Parent Notification webpage.

For questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

On Tuesday, we'll begin learning about the Other People Mindset (OPM) element of being present and giving others our attention.

This OPM element means that when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention. A deliberate focus on being present is so important today due to the increasing number of distractions vying for our time and attention. Phone calls, text messages, emails, social media notifications all have the formidable capacity to pull us away from the present moment and what’s most important – our relationships with other people. How dangerous is this to our well-being and the fabric of our society? Very.

So, why does this matter? Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. The research is crystal clear, relationships are the cornerstone of health, happiness, and resilience. And, if we don’t give our attention to the people we’re building relationships with – whether family members, close friends, or even distant colleagues – we can’t build those relationships.

On a group level, it’s vitally important that we pick our heads up from our cell phones and truly listen to other people when they’re talking. A positive culture is built with positive relationships – and we can’t build positive relationships without attention. So, the answer is clear: we need to pay attention to people in our lives. That’s going to be good for individuals, small groups, and large societies.
