Lemon Road Community News 10.2.20

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Library

Thank you to those of you who joined our Principals Coffee today. Here is the recording for anyone who couldn’t join us live and look for the slide deck on our webpage. Two short videos are also available. The first provides an overview of the AAP continuum of services, and you’ll see examples of how all students have access to advanced learning experiences in elementary schools. The second video describes the Young Scholars Model, a FCPS developed program to help identify students from historically underrepresented populations for AAP services. Contact Avery Straw, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, at akstraw@fcps.edu with any questions.  Level IV screening information meetings will be held later in October, and all referrals for level IV services are due by December 1, 2020.

We are looking forward to seeing some of our families for the Library Curbside Pickup Program on Monday.  If your child has put books on hold and you filled out the survey specifying Lemon Road as your pickup location, please come to Library Door #5 between 1pm-6pm.  At this time, we are not accepting any more holds for this Monday pickup.   Please be sure to wear a mask and practice social distancing during the event.    If you have questions, contact Ms. Gabby Burke – 703-714-6447 or goburke@fcps.edu.

On Monday, we welcome back Taylor Argue from maternity leave!  That means we will say goodbye and thank you to Nadieh Aburub who has been supporting 4th grade while Rachel Harris stepped up to start the year for Taylor.  Thank you Ms. Aburub and Ms. Harris for everything you have done this fall!

Have a great October weekend!

Positivity Project: Open-mindedness

Open-mindedness

I hope you're all doing well enjoying exploring teamwork with your children! On Monday, we'll begin learning about open-mindedness. For a 1-page character card overview, click here. And, for P2 for Families (password: P2), click here.  Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored beliefs, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.  This character strength helps individuals build knowledge about specific issues or points of view – and provide sound recommendations and advice.

Walking Wednesdays

Walking Wednesdays

FCPS Safe Routes to School in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaign will be promoting Walking Wednesdays during the 2020-2021 school year to encourage physical activity.  Walking Wednesdays is a county-wide community program designed to promote physical and mental health. FCPS Safe Routes to School in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaign encourages students and parents/guardians to take time each Wednesday to walk and connect with friends, neighbors and classmates before the school day and workday begins.  Whether your walk takes you around the block or to your school, we hope you will find others out walking and can greet one another from a distance.

Walking Wednesdays will kick off on October 7, 2020, which is International Walk to School Day.  Coming in November will be Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 18, 2020.  More information about Walking Wednesdays can be found here. Families, neighborhoods or schools can register their participation in International Walk to School Day on October 7, 2020. Here are some ideas for your neighborhood Walk to School Day 2020.
