Safe Routes to School Walking Wednesdays

Walking Wednesdays is a county-wide community program designed to promote physical and mental health. FCPS Safe Routes to School in collaboration with Fairfax County Park Authority’s Move Your Way and Healthy Strides campaign encourages students and parents/guardians to take time each Wednesday to walk and connect with friends, neighbors and classmates before the school day and workday begins.  Whether your walk takes you around the block, to the bus stop, or to your school, we hope you will find others out walking and can greet one another from a distance.

Walking Wednesdays will kick off on October 7, 2020, which is International Walk to School Day.  Coming in November will be Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 18, 2020.  More information about Walking Wednesdays can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/safety-and-transportation/transportation-services/safe-routes-school-srts.

Families, neighborhoods or schools can register their participation in International Walk to School Day on October 7, 2020 at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/registration/

FREE FCPS Parent Orchestra!

You are invited to join the FREE FCPS Parent Orchestra! Parent Orchestra began three years ago and has grown into a large, supportive community that goes beyond just learning an Orchestra instrument. Parents have a Google group where they chat with each other, ask each other for tips, and get together to practice!

Parent Orchestra is for…

-              Parents who want to help their student with their instrument at home.

-              ...who have always wanted to learn how to play an instrument.

-              ...who want to learn a new instrument.

-              ...who played previously and want to get back into it.

No previous musical experience is needed and it is completely free!

We have two levels this year during distance learning, Previous Experience and Beginners. There is an Advanced group as well that meets more independently. We meet online, every other Thursday at 7:00 pm. All classes are recorded and posted on our website, so if you missed a session you can rewatch and catch back up! When we are given the green light to meet in person, we will meet at Annandale High School with a plan to phase in safely.

You can explore our website for more information here (use a non FCPS device to access the website) and can find the sign up here.

Please email Annie Ray at amray@fcps.edu with any questions!

ATES Library News

How to get and return ATES LIBRARY BOOKS:

Happy Reading

Students and parents are now using the online library catalog to place a hold on books they want (only books that are marked “in”): here is video that shows you how. You can pick them up at the main entrance of the school AT SPECIFIC DAYS and TIMES. Parents who want to help their younger children use the catalog to get books can find more information on the Library page of the ATES website (just click the “Reading Resources” button.)

Book Rescource

Ask your children if they have reserved books to pick up. Books can be returned and new ones picked up at the main entrance of the school at the following days and times:

Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 3:30-6PM and Wednesday Oct. 7 from 8am-12:30PM (Place your holds by Friday, Oct. 2!)

This will take place every 2 weeks. Upcoming dates and times will be announced. Remember, holds must be placed no later than the Friday before the pickup day.

Happy Reading!

PUBLIC Library News: Get books more easily with LEAP

LEAP

LEAP: Library Equity Access Pass : https://research.fairfaxcounty.gov/education/leap

Now any FCPS school student can go to any public library, like the George Mason Regional Library, and check out up to 3 books at a time for 6 weeks each WITHOUT A LIBRARY CARD. Have trouble remembering due dates? No worries: there are no fines or fees ever!

The public library’s LEAP program is a way to give more students a chance to get books from the public library.

Of course, you can still get a regular public library account WITH a library card. That will let you put holds on books, access ebooks and audiobooks, and let you use other library services that you can’t do with LEAP.

But also take advantage of the LEAP program to check out a few books: it is easy and worry free!

Kaiser Permanente's First Ever Virtual Dance party

You are invited to Kaiser Permanente’s first ever virtual Dance Party for our school partners to stay active and promote wellness! The party will take place every Thursday evening in October from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m and all school administration, staff, teachers, families, and even pets are invited to join in the fun.

Turn on your camera and show your smiling faces and dance moves. Spread the word to your colleagues to join the party, too. Plus, you’ll have a chance to win prizes!

Register today at the following link: https://kpmas.cvent.com/SchoolDance

Here are some quick tips for the evening:

  • Dress in comfortable clothing and footwear.
  • Make sure your environment is clear of any slip, trip, or fall hazards and that you have enough space.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Pace yourself and take breaks when you need to.
  • Cast the party to a larger screen or place device in an area and at a height for easy viewing.
  • If participating with others, follow physical distancing and masking requirements.
  • But most of all…. have fun!
