Glasgow Community Gazette - September 27

Glasgow Community:

This past week we held our first PTA meeting of the year - one in English and one in Spanish - with the same content in both. Across the two days, over 90 families joined in an important conversation about equity and bias. If you were unable to join the meeting you can find the recordings in Spanish and English.

As a reminder, this year Back to School Night events will be both synchronous and asynchronous. We look forward to seeing you this week at one of our “live” Back to School Night sessions on Tuesday, September 29, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. We will be holding brief Town Hall Sessions using the following schedule, if you have students in multiple grades, choose one as the content will be the same:

The asynchronous portion of our Back to School Night can be found on our website later today. There you will see a welcome message from Dr. Ricardy Anderson, School Board Member, welcome messages in English and Spanish from Katie Madigan, Acting Principal, and short videos from each of your student’s teachers. Be on the lookout for a personalized email as well, sent to your student’s fcpsschools.net Gmail and your own email, that will include links to each of your student’s teachers’ short videos.

Finally, we would like to get your feedback on your experiences thus far with Virtual Learning. We are always looking to grow and welcome your voice in this process. Please take a minute to complete this form and consider leaving contact information so that we can follow up with further questions to support our growth.

Have a great week, and as always, please reach out for questions or concerns.

Important Information

Teacher Absences - Per FCPS, subs will not be provided for 3 days or fewer of a teacher’s absence. If your child’s teacher will be out for 3 days or fewer, you can expect the teacher to post a message in Google Classroom and provide asynchronous work. If a teacher will be out for 4 or more days, FCPS will then provide a sub and synchronous classes resume on the 4th day. Thank you for your patience as we improve our systems in this new learning environment.

Managing Student Emails - Each time a teacher posts an assignment, comment in the chat, or provide feedback on assignments, students are notified via email. Some students and families are feeling pretty overwhelmed by the amount of emails they’re receiving. Although teachers cannot turn off notifications for their classes, each student has the ability to choose what they do/don’t want to be notified of via email. This document (must be fcpsschools.net login) shows them how to make changes to their settings if you wanted to share it.

We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources: At Glasgow Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of powerful digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. Without consent, teachers will need to plan additional lessons or deviate from a useful application altogether. You can find our school’s list of the resources here: https://glasgowms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Please follow this link to indicate whether or not your student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) - Parents and guardians, please review the Students Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link https://forms.gle/Pbz5C42jJPADQLyu5 . The form must be filled out one time per student.

Grades in SIS StudentVUE - Students and families are now able to view student grades in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE. Please click on this link for more information about gaining a SIS ParentVUE account. For ParentVUE questions, please direct families to reach out to Dana Rivas at dhrivas@fcps.edu

Schedule Change Requests - At Glasgow, our priority is to ensure students are registered for classes that are an appropriate match to their academic needs and interests. Each year we are only able to accommodate a very limited number of course changes and priority is given to students with errors in their schedule. If your student would like to make a request for a course change, please have your student email their counselor.
