From The Principal, Jenni Coakley

Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who attended Back-to-School Night on Monday evening. We appreciate all your continued support and all you do “behind the screen” to support your child. We appreciate all the positive comments and feedback.  If you were unable to attend Back- to-School Night, please check your child’s Google Classroom for the link to the recording which includes the teacher’s presentation.

It has been awesome to see so many of our Cubbies checking out books from our library and utilizing our Curbside check-out or bus stop delivery (see schedule below). We hit 129 books on Tuesday!

We can do virtually anything!

Make sure you tell us if your child will be doing asynchronous/independent work through Google Classroom.

Parent Consent for Select Digital Resources -PLEASE COMPLETE!

At Cub Run, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families.  Some of the digital resources that your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used.  You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://cubrunes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources  While your child may not use all of the tools listed on our website, our list includes any tools that our teachers at Cub Run may use which need parental permission.  There are other tools that will be used which do not require parent consent.

Included on this page is also a link to the form where you need to indicate whether or not your child is allowed to use the listed digital resources this year.  This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.  We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about any digital resources that may be used this year.

From the PTA... Cub Run-a-Thon Information

The Cub Run-a-Thon is the PTA's major fundraiser and supports our PTA all year long! This year is going to look a little different - but the PTA still needs your support to keep the organization going through 2020. Join us for a virtual fun-run on November 2nd! Our total school fundraising goal for 2020 is $10,000. You can help to make this goal by having your child raise $20! This is a smaller amount than in years past, but it is the minimum we need to raise to continue to give support to our PTA and teachers during our distance learning adventures.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for kindergarten through grade twelve. The FLE program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make healthy, responsible, respectful, and life-enhancing decisions related to human growth and development, relationships, and emotional and social health. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, please complete the form that accompanies this letter or access the opt out forms online.

Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school, using one of the two methods below, prior to Family Life Education instruction in December.

  1. Email sdsobeki@fcps.edu and cagodinezcor@fcps.edu indicating which lesson(s) your child we bill opted out of and type “FLE Opt Out Lesson” in the subject line.
  2. Email a scanned copy of the Opt Out form to: sdsobeki@fcps.edu and cagodinezcor@fcps.edu and include FLE Opt Out Lesson” in the subject line.

Your child will be included in all Family Life Education instruction unless you request that he/she be opted out using the opt-out form. You do not need to return the form to the school if you wish for your child to participate in FLE instruction. If you return the opt-out form and later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify the principal in writing.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions (lesson objectives and descriptive statements) are available for each grade level at Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available online in FCPS 24-7 Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Grade level-specific lessons are available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).

Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to providing age-appropriate instruction in the very important topics included in Family Life Education. For information about scheduling of FLE instruction, please contact your child’s teacher or school. For more information or questions regarding the FLE program, please contact Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or email Carrie Reynolds at cfreynolds@fcps.edu

ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (AAP) ELEMENTARY CONTINUUM OF SERVICES

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of services. A video showing each level of service in action, as well as information about middle and high school services, are available at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics.

  • Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)

Level I services are provided to all students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Level I services include teaching students to use critical and creative thinking skills to process content. It also includes periodic opportunities to use advanced academic curriculum throughout the year. Student responses to these lessons are used as part of the identification process for Levels II-IV. Parents may practice the nine strategies during family conversations and activities. Descriptions and videos of the nine critical and creative thinking strategies can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics/critical-and-creative-thinking.

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

  • Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Level II services are available for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 for students with strength in a specific subject area. The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV to extend and enrich in the subject area strength. Screening for this level of service occurs for all students in grades K-5 in May and is ongoing throughout the school year. Multiple criteria are used to screen for this level of service and decisions are made at the local school level.

  • Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Level III services are available for students in Grades 3-6 who are eligible for part-time direct services from the AART. Students are identified by a screening committee at the local school.  The AART uses materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV in the four core subject areas through either a weekly pull-out class or weekly co-teaching model with the classroom teacher. Screening for this level of service occurs for all students in grades K-5 in May and is ongoing throughout the school year.  Multiple criteria are used to screen for this level of service and decisions are made at the local school level.

  • Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Level IV services are available for students in Grades 3-8 who are found eligible through a central selection process.  Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis.

Multiple criteria are reviewed to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. The countywide central selection committee determines eligibility for full-time AAP Level IV placement.

Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is held for students who are new to FCPS and have been referred
  • Spring screening is held for any FCPS-enrolled student who has been referred

Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held.

  • A referral form may be turned in from the first day of school until the published deadline.
  • The referral deadline is October 8, 2020 for students who are new to FCPS and December 1, 2020 for students who are not new to FCPS this school year.
  • The referral form is available on the Forms page: https://www.fcps.edu/node/38893
