Message from the Principal

Principal Theresa Khuluki

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to week 3! I want to start by providing clarity on some terminology which I know is causing confusion. In the spring, we used the words asynchronous to describe independent learning using posted assignments and the word synchronous to describe virtual face to face instruction. FCPS has asked us to now consider any activity that is outside of school or class time as an asynchronous assignment, and any activity completed during the school day to be called a synchronous assignment. This is why in grades 1-6, you will see a 30-minute independent work time on the daily schedule labeled synchronous reading and writing time. The only asynchronous assignments will occur on Mondays at the elementary level.

I have been receiving many emails about the FCPS plan to return to in-person learning. FCPS continues work from the summer on plans to phase-in small groups, or “cohorts”, of students with the greatest needs into school for in-person instruction. This includes select special education programs, English Language Learners and newcomers, and select career and technical education courses that need access to specialized equipment. An update will be provided to the School Board at the public September 22 Work Session.

Please see below for many more important Wolftrap updates!

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki
Principal

Back to School Night

The evening was a great success and thank you to all the parents who were able to join us! Classroom teachers will be emailing the link to the recording if you missed it, and we also have some special videos on our BTSN website- https://wolftrapes.fcps.edu/node/2262. Here you will find video introductions from all of our specialists and resource staff! We have also included the welcome videos from me and Dr. Grove, the PTA, and all of our School Board videos. This includes the video from Melanie Meren as the Hunter Mill Representative, as well as our three At-Large School Board members.

Advanced Academics Update

Please see Mrs. Newman’s fall newsletter by clicking on this link. The newsletter linked here will have important information about upcoming dates, the continuum of advanced services and  updated screening information.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, September 30th at 5:00 pm, Mrs. Newman and I will be holding a virtual Advanced Academics information session, specifically explaining the four levels of services provided at Wolftrap Elementary and Fairfax County Public Schools. Please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/2fB68Zo2GpgJxwMy5 if you would like to attend this session. Mrs. Newman will be sending all registered participants a link for the session the morning of September 30th.

WTES Monday Clubs

I am very excited to announced that our optional extracurricular clubs will begin next Monday (9/28) with our specialists!! We decided to move them to the afternoon time slots so we would not have any conflicts with small groups that students have been invited to attend by other staff members in the morning. In order to join, you will need to know the Google Classroom code which I cannot publish in our newsletter for security reasons. The codes and a description of each club will be provided to parents on Friday in the Weekly Parent Guide emailed by the classroom teachers. If you are not familiar with the easy process of joining a Google Classroom, please watch this one minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1iJ51lhpA8&feature=youtu.be

The specialists look forward to seeing your child at these fun clubs!

Positivity Project

We are continuing the Positivity Project this year. Teachers and students will work together to learn about 24 positive character strengths and how those strengths shape our understanding of ourselves and others. Students will reflect on these traits and how we can respect each other’s differences. This is our second year to use the Positivity Project, and teachers have enjoyed seeing the different ways that students can share what they have learned about positive thinking.

Students and staff enjoy focusing on the positive, and I am convinced that this program has helped students rely on positive ways to handle difficult situations. During this school year, more than ever, it is our intention to help students see the positive characteristics that they can display in challenging times. This year, the Positivity Project has launched materials you can use at home, together with your children’s teachers. I will post the link here, and teachers have the password for Wolftrap families to use the materials. https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/

Library Curbside Book Checkout

Beginning next Monday (9/28) the Library will begin curbside book pickup. Students will log in to the Library website https://sites.google.com/fcpsschools.net/wolftrap-es-library/curbside-library?authuser=1 with their school username/password and reserve up to 5 books. You will receive an email from Ms. Stubbs when the books are ready. Pick up will take place on alternating Mondays (K-2 one week and 3-6 the following week). Students in Kindergarten and 1st will also have the option of requesting a “mystery bag” of books chosen by Ms. Stubbs. The website above contains a flyer with additional details on the Curbside Pickup process and you may reach out directly to Ms. Stubbs with questions.

Wofltrap PTAPTA week 2 collage

Thank you all who participated in Wolftrap Under the Stars! We thank Ghaffari Orthodontics for sponsoring this event. We got to see goats, cows, and pigs named Frodo and Sam. We also learned Hoover, the goat, loves scratches.

Many families found our eight Wolfies in the Window throughout the week! Congratulations to the 14 families that got on the leaderboard! Dr. Grove and Mrs. Burdett with her bear Paige participated as well. Check out our website here for the complete list! Email scavengerhunt@wolftrappta.org with your address to have your free Nothing Bundt Cake bundtlet sent to you.

Our celebration ended with Kona Iceys and dancing the night away virtually! The Kona truck was a hit and we were so happy to have great weather. We hope you had fun!
