Materials Distribution Updated Map

Textbook and Instructional Material Distribution - ALL STUDENTS

Due to the inclement weather and the automobile accident on Rolling Road, we are opening the instructional material distribution to all grade levels on Friday and Monday. The sessions are as follows:

  • Friday September 18th 3:30pm to 7:00pm
  • Monday September 21st 11:30am to 3:00pm
  • Monday September 21st 3:30pm to 7:00pm

When you arrive, you enter the school grounds via the Tuttle Road entrance (next to the baseball field). Last name beginning with A through L will drive behind the school and last name beginning with M through Z will drive in front of the school.

We ask that you do the following things to help us in this process and stay within our social distancing guidelines.

1. Wear a mask in the car upon arrival

2. Have a large sheet of paper with the Students First and Last name as well as student ID number

3. Follow the traffic pattern set up on the school grounds

4. Information will be collected at first tent on the route

5. Materials will be distributed from the second tent.

Not all classes will be distributing materials. Many classes are using online materials for instruction.

During class, prior to the 17th, teachers who are planning to issue a textbook or course materials will notify their students.

If none of your child’s teachers indicate there are materials to collect you do not have to come to the school.

Monday Remediation

Monday remediation is a time (between 8:10am-11:15am) when students can meet with teachers to get more direct support in a smaller group setting.

There are 2 ways that students can be part of the Monday remediation sessions:

  1. Teachers will request and set up a time on Monday for students to attend remediation.
  2. Students can reach out to their teachers to ask for a remediation session if they feel like they need it. Students should reach out to their teachers by Fridays to set up remediation for the following Monday. Teachers will then follow-up a time with the students and when they will meet on Monday.

*****************************************************************************************

LS Update for Students

All students should check with their teachers to verify which sessions in Schoology to use for their LS periods. Teachers will be using sessions in their course sections and not in the LS sections in Schoology.

Food For Neighbors is an all-volunteer organization committed to helping local teens struggling with hunger. Last year, we were able to provide over 1500 weekend snack packs for Springfield area middle and high school students.

With your support, we can reach even more students in need as we have over 500 students from the West Springfield pyramid who get a snack pack each week. Participation is as simple as filling a Food For Neighbors Red Bag once every other month and putting it on your porch on our pick up days. We provide the bag, a desired food list, and pick-up date reminder texts. Our next collection is November 7, but sign up now to make sure you have time to get your bag and purchase your food to fill it. If you do not already have a red bag, but would like to donate food for the next collection, please register as a Red Bag Donor today at: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/

Student Activities Information

Sports and Activities

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Committee, voted to move forward with Model 3 in its re-opening of sports and activities for the 2020-21 school year. Model 3 delays all VHSL sports and activities until December 14 and adopts the Condensed Interscholastic Plan. This model leaves all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.

Model 3 – Condensed Interscholastic Plan:

  • Season 1 (Winter) December 14 to February 20 (First Contest Date–December 28): Basketball, Gymnastics, Indoor Track, Swim/Dive, Wrestling.
  • Season 2 (Fall) February 15 to May 1 (First Contest Date–March 1): Cheer, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Volleyball.
  • Season 3 (Spring) April 12 to June 26 (First Contest Date–April 26): Baseball, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field.

More information is available on the VHSL website

Once new information is available from FCPS and the VHSL it will be sent out to the WSHS community. This will include an updated list of head coaches and their contact information.

Marching Band

Marching band season has been postponed. If students are able to return to school this fall or winter, we will consider possible marching band performance opportunities that do not conflict with the concert band assessments.

Clubs

FCPS and West Springfield are committed to continuing to offer clubs and activities for the coming school year. With the start of the school year being virtual things will be different. FCPS is currently looking at how this will look. As soon as a finalized plan is in place the information will be disseminated to staff and students.
