Olde Creek Weekly Update - September 18

Team OC

A Message from Principal Miller

Dear Olde Creek Families and Friends,

We have had another exciting and successful week of virtual learning at Olde Creek! Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers for your help and support. We have now had each of our students engage in virtual learning and have had a daily attendance rate of 98-99%. Way to go, Bears! Our teachers and staff continue to focus on relationships, strong classroom communities, developing innovative and engaging lessons, and supporting one another. We are so proud of the efforts of our teachers, staff, and families-we are certainly stronger together!

It was wonderful to see all of our families who came to our first library curbside check-out on Monday-it was a great success! We were happy to see so many Bears get new books to read. Please see the information below to place books on hold to pick up on Monday, September 21.

We look forward to welcoming our families to our first virtual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 23rd. Please see the schedule and information below. If you are not able to join, a recording of the session will be posted to your child’s Google Classroom.

Thank you all again for your grace and understanding while we continue to navigate the start of our school year virtually. We appreciate all of the positive comments and feedback.

Stronger Together,

Melissa Miller, Principal
Alison Butler, Assistant Principal
Kelly Durso, Assistant Principal

Updates & Reminders

Virtual Back to School Night

Wednesday, September 23

6:30 pm – 7:15 pm-Session 1

7:15 pm – 8:00 pm-Session 2

In the interest of maximizing your time with your child’s teacher, we are offering you the following tips and information:

  • You will receive a link from your child’s teacher to access the Back to School Night Session.
  • At the beginning of each session, there will be a short video featuring our administrative team: Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Durso, and Mrs. Butler; our PTA president, Kat Reider; and a message from our School Board Representative Megan McLaughlin and Dr. Ricardy Anderson. In addition, there are three At Large School Board Member videos available here to view.
  • The content from session 1 will be repeated in session 2 for families with multiple students. Additionally, one session will be recorded and posted in your child’s Google Classroom for you to view later.
  • Teachers will be highlighting and reviewing schedules, overview of the curriculum, classroom expectations, routines, and more!

Attendance

Attendance will be taken Monday through Friday. If your child is not able to log in and attend class throughout the day, or will be late, because of illness, appointment, trip, connectivity issues, etc., please make sure to notify not only your teacher but the attendance line or by sending an email to our attendance mailbox. Make sure you tell us if your child will be doing asynchronous/independent work through Google Classroom.

If there is no parent contact and the student fails to log in, the student is marked unverified and our office staff will be contacting the family for the reason for the absence.

Monday

Monday Schedule

Each Monday morning from 8:30-9:00am, classes will continue to hold Team Huddles in their BBCU homeroom link. These sessions will be another opportunity to build strong online classroom communities. It will also be an opportunity for teachers to review the asynchronous/independent work assigned to students for the day. After Team Huddles, students may also be scheduled for synchronous specialized instruction based on need. These scheduled sessions will be communicated from the teacher.

shoutout

OC Staff Shout-outs

As we kick-off this school year, we'd like to celebrate our incredible Olde Creek staff. If your family would like to give a shout out to an OC staff member, please complete this survey.

library

Library Curbside Check-out

The first OC Library Curbside Pick-up was a great success!  Students-continue to place books on hold for check-out each week.  Parents-continue to bring your students to Olde Creek on Mondays from 12:00-3:00pm and 4:00-7:00pm to pick-up their library books.  Students in grades K-2 can come to the curbside check-out event and pick-up a “Mystery Bag,” of books without putting any books on hold.

Please be aware that when a student places a very popular book on hold, it may take several weeks for that book to be checked-out to them.  This is due to other students (that placed the book on hold before them) getting the book first, as well as all books going into a 7-day isolation period before being available again for check-out.

Press here for a link to a video showing how to put books on Hold in the Destiny system.

We can’t wait to see you at our next curbside pick-up event on September 21st!

You Belong

Olde Creek Town Hall

To continue the conversation from our Woodson Pyramid Town Hall, we will be hosting a Virtual Listening Forum on Racial Equity on Wednesday, September 30th from 6:30pm-7:30pm via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to hear directly from our families. Darnessia Semper from the Office of Equity and Cultural Responsiveness will be joining Olde Creek for this conversation.

The purpose of this time together is to provide a safe space and platform for our community members to share openly and candidly about the strengths and aspirations/goals of our community as we continue to work to create a welcoming environment that is supportive of all students and families. We are committed to continue to grow our partnership with you and address the needs and concerns of our students and families. We look forward to this opportunity to listen, learn, and hear from one another.

If you or your family would like an interpreter, please reach out to Alison Butler (ajbutler@fcps.edu) by September 24.

fitness quest

Reading Fitness Quest

Do you want to earn ribbons for keeping your mind and body in shape?  You can participate in Olde Creek’s Reading Fitness Quest and do just that! To make it easier on students and families, we will be trying Reading Fitness Quest digitally this year!

All you have to do is exercise for 20 minutes and read for 20 minutes in a single day and that counts as 1 point.  Accumulate 50 points and you will get your first ribbon!

Please see the Olde Creek PE website for more information and join the Reading Fitness Quest Google Classroom to get started tracking your points! (You will need to be logged into your child’s @fcpsschools.net account to access).

Let’s get moving and reading and keep our minds and bodies in shape!

Consent

Action Required: Parental Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Olde Creek Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to the school if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

PTA

PTA Corner

Thanks to those of you who have already signed up for the PTA.  If you haven’t already, there is still time. Please visit the Olde Creek PTA website.

Your membership this year will cover our operational costs, such as National, State and Regional PTA dues and insurance, as well as student supplies and staff appreciation. We will have a direct fundraising ask shortly, in lieu of our event fundraising.  Be on the lookout for that.

Don’t forget our first Family Dinner Night this year at Chipotle in Fair City Mall on Tuesday, September 22 from 5-9 PM. 33% of the proceeds go to support the PTA!

Contact the PTA (board@oldecreekpta.com) with any questions and keep up to date by visiting the website  Olde Creek PTA.

Bears Care

Olde Creek Bears Care Community Outreach Program

Help! Donations Needed for Bears Care Community Program

As school is approaching, we will be collecting donations for the Bears Care Food Pantry. The pantry distributes food provisions to Olde Creek students and their families in need for the week. Use this link to sign up for any donations you are able to provide during this extraordinary time!

Instead of the previous drop off procedure at the school, please email Lisa Goodwin at lisamarm@gmail.com about a drop off or for  pick up time and date. Check out our list of  item ideas on our PTA website. Most food items are welcome at this time. Gift cards are also greatly appreciated for families right now!  Stores, such as Walmart, can mail gift cards without even having to make a trip to the store!

Or, order food items from our Bears Care Amazon Wish List and have it delivered directly. (Use Amazon Smile and have a percentage donated to OCE!). Thank you, as always, for your kindness and generosity!
