Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

Congratulations on another successful week!  We know balancing everything in your homes is hard during the pandemic, so thank you for all of the support you have given every day to help your child be successful in virtual learning!

Next Thursday, 9/24 we will have our Back to School Night - Part 2.  Teachers will be hosting sessions in their homerooms and will be sharing curriculum and information that is specific to your child’s grade level. The sessions will be from 6:00 -6:40pm and 6:45 - 7:25pm. You may choose either time depending on what is more convenient for your schedule. From 5:30 - 6:00pm this evening in our All Students Schoology Course (logged in through your child’s account), you will be able to virtually meet with any of the specialists from Stenwood.  One of the School Board Members at Large, Ms. Sizemore Heizer, will also have a room you can visit virtually.  These sessions are available so you can pop in and ask any questions; there will not be any formal presentation in these sessions.

This week’s Monday enrichment sessions were great! Below are the offerings for next Monday.  As a reminder, there is Morning Meeting at 8:40am on Mondays.  If you plan on having your child only participate asynchronously on Monday, please email the attendance line that you are attending asynchronously: StenwoodElem.Attendance@fcps.edu.

We will begin our next round of Student Learning Materials Distribution on Friday, 9/25 from 11am - Noon and Monday, 9/28 from 2:00 - 4:00pm.  Please plan on coming by the Kiss N Ride Loop during one of these times as your child’s teachers have worked hard to create and share learning materials that they will utilize throughout instruction.

In today’s Hive Happenings we have included:

  • Monday Enrichment Schedule
  • Pick Up for Student Learning Materials
  • Curbside Library Checkout
  • Back to School Night Part 2 on Thursday, 9/24

Monday Enrichment Schedule

On Mondays we will be offering enrichment sessions to various grade levels.  These are completely optional.  Below is a list of what will be offered this Monday.  Each Friday we will provide the list of sessions in our Hive Happenings.  To navigate to most of the sessions, students will use the All Students course in Schoology.  Once there, if they click on the Collaborate Ultra tab they will see the live sessions.

Pick Up for Student Learning Materials

Your child will have an individualized envelope of learning materials ready and waiting for them at Stenwood on Friday 9/25 and Monday 9/28!!!!

Mark your calendars for these pick up times:

Friday, 9/25 from 11am - Noon or Monday, 9/28 from 2:00 - 4:00pm

Please plan on coming by the Kiss N Ride Loop during one of these times as your child’s teachers have worked hard to create and share learning materials that they will utilize throughout instruction.

Curbside Library Checkout

Stingers can now go to Destiny Discover, the library catalog, and put books on hold!

Please note that the catalog may give you a pop-up message saying the book is ready – do not believe it!  Only come to the school AFTER you receive an email from us letting you know the items are ready and what time you’ll be able to pick them up. Be sure to mark your calendar because after one week, the books will be returned to the library so other students may enjoy them.

Click here for directions on how to put books on hold.

Need to return books?  You may return library books on Mondays from 2:00-4:00PM and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30PM.  Drop off location will be in the Kiss-n-Ride loop in the back of the school. As always, please contact Mrs. Cole, our librarian, if you have any questions.

Additionally, to support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS  is launching a new Parent Technology Help Desk. Free/Reduced Lunch Applications are available for those who qualify and wish to initiate or renew their applications for the 20-21 school year.  Your child(ren)’s application from last school year is only good for the first few days of this school year. You must send in a new household application for each school year.  The application is available HERE

Positivity Project: Curiosity

PP Logo

This week we are focusing on the Curiosity. You like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything.

“Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.”

                                                                  ~Voltaire

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • How is curiosity the opposite of judgement?
  • How do you feel when you discover something new? Learn something new?
  • What are some things you fear? How can CURIOSITY replace that fear?
