Louise Archer Sunshine News 9-15

From the Principal's Desk:

We are in Week 2 of school and it is wonderful to see our students and teachers learning together! Thank you for all of your support from home to ensure your child is accessing the virtual classrooms and school opportunities. I know it is a challenge for all of us during this transition and we truly appreciate your partnership! I also want to thank our wonderful staff for the endless hours they are putting into creating engaging learning activities and helping students to make connections with one another. Please review the important updates below regarding some new processes we have in place during distance learning.

Announcements

Virtual Back to School Night Information

Please mark your calendar to attend this important parent event on Thursday, September 24. Each grade level team will be presenting one time according to the following times:

  • K-3: 5:30-6:10 pm
  • 4-6: 6:15-7:00 pm

The presentation will be recorded so that families who are unable to attend the live session can watch it at their convenience. Both class sessions will begin with a few brief introductory videos. We will be posting additional videos from our at-large school board members to the Louise Archer website. Your child’s teacher will be emailing you the link to the BBCU site by the end of the day on September 23rd.

Teacher Absences

In the virtual environment, there is a different process regarding substitutes and classwork if teachers are absent. We want to make you aware of what procedures will be implemented if teachers are absent. In the majority of cases, teachers will be able to communicate with families in advance of the absence, so you are prepared for work to complete that day. FCPS has developed procedures for schools to request a substitute teacher beginning with the 4th day of absence. Therefore, if teachers are absent, work will be posted to Google classrooms and completed independently on days 1-3 of the teacher absence. Please note that students should log in every morning to attend morning meeting and be present for attendance. A staff member will be assigned to take attendance every day. Students will be able to attend specials on the day that a classroom teacher is absent. In the event that there is a need for an emergency absence, teachers will communicate this information to families via email and post any additional directions regarding assignments in Google classrooms. Each week, teachers send a schedule with the activities for the week, so you can also refer to that document if a teacher is absent. Thank you for your patience as we navigate this new system.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Parents and guardians, please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr.  After reviewing the information, please fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link we have provided.  The form must be filled out one time per student by October 30.

Family Life Education

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) . FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View. Account information is available at your local school or online. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. Parents/guardians wishing to opt their child out of instruction may complete and return the opt-out form or scan and email a copy of the completed form to kjcutri@fcps.edu. An opt-out request can also be made in an email which indicates the lesson(s) the child will be opted out of. The actual opt-out form is not required. Forms are available online for Elementary (K-6).

Program questions may be addressed to Mrs. Condra at jgcondra@fcps.edu or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator
