Please read the FCPS Universal Screener Parent Notification Letter. Universal screening gives teachers information about strengths and needs in students’ basic reading and mathematics skills. Gaps in basic skills are the root of many later learning difficulties. Early detection and intervention in these gaps can help students reach their potential. In FCPS, we use i-Ready as our Universal Screener. All students will participate in this screener.
The public website (www.fcps.edu/us) has resources for parents:
- A video for taking the assessment at home
- Uses the vision test as an example of a screener
- Explains the 50/50 design of the test for parents
- Says directly “The best way to help is not to help”
- Set them up for success by giving them a quiet place to take the test
- A checklist to learn how to support children with iREADY
- includes a video that explains the assessment, setting up the experiences, how to motivate the student, how to know if their child finished the assessment
- explicit prompts are given to families for encouragement and motivation without providing help
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction. Opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to school materials on our Eagle View website here and are available online for Elementary (K-6). Click on the link below to review detailed grade-level program descriptions/materials or for the opt out form.

- Report your student’s absence to school any day he/she is unable to participate in learning, including on Mondays.
- If an absence is not reported, teachers and/or school personnel will attempt to contact parents to identify the student’s absence reasons.
- An eNotify (electronic) message will be sent to parents about the student absence.
- Parents should contact the school and provide information about the student absence.
