Monday Attendance Clarification

This is a reminder about attendance in Monday morning’s Panther Time Connections block.  We are thrilled that our students are logging into their classes and participating at a high rate.  Attendance is also required for Monday’s Panther Time.  All students should log into their 4th Period Panther Time from 9:00-9:20AM every Monday.  This time is used for teachers to check in with students at the start of each week.  Further, students have time to organize their week (determine goals for the week, note which teachers they may want to check in with, and clarify tasks that they need to submit).

If a student needs to miss any class time (full or partial day), a parent or guardian should report the absence to the RCMS Attendance Office using one of the following methods:

  1. Complete the Carson MS Attendance Form (preferred)
  2. Send an email with full details to: Attendance@fcps.edu
  3. Call the attendance line at 703-925-3636 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence

Materials Pick Up

We are very thankful for your tremendous presence at our first materials pick-up event on September 21.  We recognize that many families faced a very long wait for the items that were distributed.  This was our first experience with this type of event and there were many lessons learned.  We are grateful for the patience that you provided on Monday afternoon.

The course materials from Monday are available at school for pick-up.  Parents may stop by RCMS during the main office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00AM-2:00PM.  It would be most helpful if you could print out a copy of your child's schedule and bring it with you. Our office staff will assist you with locating the materials your child needs for their class schedule.  (If you intend to stop by the school, please wear a mask and observe social distancing rules).  If you secured items during Monday’s pick-up, you do not need to return to the school at this time.

The available materials are listed below.  Please note the descriptions for specific courses:

  • The daily assignment book (DAB), available for all 7th and 8th graders
  • 7th grade Science materials (Students should only pick up materials designated by their science teacher; check classroom postings for details.)
  • Strategies for Success course workbooks
  • Spanish and French workbooks
  • Japanese textbook and workbooks
  • 3D Art Class materials
  • Read180 class materials
  • Power Math 7&8 workbooks
  • Orchestra goodie bags
  • Individual items left for students by teacher (teacher will communicate directly with specific students if they have left any items for pick-up)

Back to School Night

Tuesday, September 29 (note date change)

Carson MS will host Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 29.  This will be a virtual event and will offer families a series of live and recorded sessions in which to participate.

Live sessions:

The Administrative Team will host two live drop-in sessions for parents in BBCU.  This is a chance to hear a presentation about the start of the school year and more details about the cumulative gradebook.  Registration for each session will be limited to the first 500 registrations.  The live sessions will be recorded and posted to our website afterwards.

7th Grade Session:  6:00-6:30PM

Please register here: 7th Grade BTSN Live Session Registration

8th Grade Session:  6:30-7:00PM

Please register here: 8th Grade BTSN Live Session Registration

A link to attend the Administrative Team live sessions will be sent to all parents who pre-registered (as stated in last week's NYC).

Teacher videos:

All teachers will have a recorded video available for viewing.  Parents may choose to view these videos during the BTSN evening, or you may come back at a later time that is more convenient..  Through these recordings, families will learn more about their child's teacher, and about the course content.

Parents, We Need Your Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Rachel Carson, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://carsonms.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to our School Based Technology Specialist, Megan Carr, if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Virtual Parent Coffee

On Thursday, October 1, parents are invited to our first Virtual Parent Coffee of the school year.  Members of our Student Services department and Administrative team will share information about the many people and resources available to support students throughout the year.  Items will include introduction of our school counselors, social and emotional health resources, information about grading, and an overview from the Administrative team.  The parent coffee is scheduled for 9:00-10:00AM and will occur through Blackboard Collaborate Ultra (BBCU).  Please use the following form to register your email to receive the BBCU link.  Virtual Parent Coffee-October 1, 2020
