Franklin MS Weekly Update - September 11

Franklin Families and Students,

As a school community, we reflect on the importance this day gained in 2001. We will never forget the brave men and women who lost their lives and the courageous sacrifices of those that responded on this day nineteen year ago. We have all been impacted in one way or another and as educators, it is our responsibility to help the next generation understand the significance of September 11.

We are grateful to everyone who helped our Franklin Falcons have a great first week of school. This was a joint effort by our parents, families, community, teachers, staff and students! THANK YOU and great job!

While we got off to a strong start, we were unfortunately interrupted by an internet outage that was widespread throughout the East Coast today. We will continue to monitor this situation and will provide updates should Monday’s instruction be disrupted.  Teachers are ready to transition to asynchronous work as needed.

Parents and Families….we need your help! Please complete the Digital Resources Parent Consent Form.  Every family must complete this for each student. Teachers need this permission to continue using the programs that promote the highest levels of student engagement.

We are extremely proud of our students, teachers, and staff for a very successful week in our virtual learning environment! We can’t wait to reconnect with them on Monday morning at 8:00 AM during our first Check and Connect session.

Always feel free to reach out to me directly if there is anything we can do to support your student and family.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Check and Connect on Monday at 8:00 AM

We will have our first Monday of the school year next week. Students will complete independent assignments, work on asynchronous activities, and have opportunities to work directly with teachers based on individual needs.

We will also utilize this time as an opportunity to continue to develop relationships at Franklin. It will allow our staff to foster connections with our students and for our students to get to know their classmates.

All Franklin students need to attend the Check and Connect session from 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM and they should use the link for their 4th period Falcon Time class. Check and Connect will occur every Monday morning. This is a required activity for all students and attendance will be taken during this session. Teachers will share important school announcements and check in with students to support their learning for the week.

Throughout the rest of the day, individual teachers will offer interventions and additional support to selected students. Students will receive information from their teachers if they need to attend additional sessions on Mondays. The remainder of the day will be reserved for independent student work.

Save the Date for Back to School Night - September 22

Please be sure to Save the Date for our Back to School Night event on Tuesday, September 22. We will be offering a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities for our families. Be on the lookout for more details next week!

Attendance at Franklin During Virtual Learning

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all schools to take attendance during virtual learning this school year. FCPS must take attendance Mondays through Fridays, unless there is a student holiday on a Monday. Students aged 5-18 must attend school every day school is in session, unless they are excused from school. To support this, parents must report absences to school each time the student may be absent.

Beginning on September 10, our school staff will reach out to families and automated messages will be sent if their student has an unverified absence from a class. If your student is unable to attend a class because of technical difficulties, please contact us and know that we will work with you to make sure the appropriate status is recorded in the system.

If your  student will miss school or a class for any reason, please contact Franklin MS:

  • Absence/Tardy Phone Line: (703) 904-5151
  • Absence/Tardy Email: FranklinMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu
  • Report an absence online

Return to School: Supports for Students with Disabilities

Check out the FCPS web page for information on distance learning supports for students with disabilities. This page covers a wide range of topics, including information for parents of students in grades PreK-12, accessing instruction in school-based programs, as well as information around nontraditional school programs, public day and career center programs, homebound and home-based instruction, and multi-agency services.

Parental Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Franklin Middle School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year
