Tech Support At Cameron

TS

Day two is in the books and we are so grateful for the support and patience of our community as we work out any glitches with distance learning!

To make sure everyone is able to participate in class fully, we'll be continuing having open office hours in the gym this week September 10th and 11th from 9am-3pm.

If you are experiencing any of the following problems, please stop by!

  • Difficulty logging into your student's computer or software apps
  • Problems with your FCPS-issued laptop including freezing, lagging, or difficulty getting the microphone to work

Please have your student's ID # and password with you to speed up our ability to help!

Scoliosis Facts for Fifth Grade Families

sfacts

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It occurs in otherwise healthy children and can be a serious health problem if it becomes severe. It generally occurs during the growing years, especially during the growth spurt from 10 to 17 years of age. Scoliosis is more frequently noted in females and when there are other affected family members. It is not caused by anything a child or his or her parents did or failed to do, although a minority of cases are associated with other medical conditions. Early detection is essential to help avoid complications that include back pain, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, deformity, and, in severe cases, problems in heart and lung function.

Treatment may involve bracing. Severe curves may require spinal surgery. The need for treatment is best determined by a trained medical professional. If you suspect your child may be affected, contact your physician or your school nurse for a physician referral.

Methods for early detection of scoliosis:

Direct your child to stand up straight, barefoot, with arms hanging freely at the sides. Boys should stand with shirts off; girls may wear halter tops.

  1. Is one shoulder higher than the other?
  2. Is one shoulder blade more prominent?
  3. Does the spine seem to curve sideways?
  4. Is one hip higher than the other? Direct your child to bend forward at the waist with arms extended toward the floor.
  5. Is there a hump in the rib region?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you should make sure that your child is screened by a doctor. The school public health nurse may provide screening for individual students at the request of the parent or guardian.

Two Important Forms

The Emergency Care and Health Information forms provide valuable information regarding student’s health conditions and are critical in the early identification of students who may need health support. Please log on to the 24/7 Blackboard account using your Parent SIS account user name and password. Go to the WeCare module and update the emergency care and health information on this form. If you need a parent SIS account, please email aknair@fcps.edu.

Parents and guardians, please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr.  After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link we have provided.  The form must be filled out one time per student. Booklets will be available in multiple languages at a later date for families

Parent Approval Needed For Digital Resources

At Cameron Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://camerones.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Messages From Our New Teachers

Heath

Heather Butters is coming to Cameron from Lorton Station where she taught in 4th-6th grade for 8 years. She has her masters in Literacy Leadership from George Mason and this is her first year as a Reading Resource teacher. She is working half time at Cameron. In her free time, she is chasing after her one-year-old son, Wesley, and her beagle, Nala.

My name is Hector Rivera.  I am an Instructional Assistant here in Cameron Elementary School.  I grew up and graduated high school in Maryland.  Currently I am finishing my bachelor's degree for Elementary and Special Education at Grand Canyon University so to eventually become a teacher.

Hector

Leary
Hello everyone! My name is Celine Leary and this is my first year at Cameron ES. I am SO EXCITED to meet you all and start this new adventure together. This is my fifth year teaching and my favorite subjects are math and science.
I am a dog mom to Apollo, who does not like taking picture. I love cooking and food, am an avid movie and tv watcher, and love reading! If you have any good recipes, I’m all ears.
This year is going to be a whole new experience for all of us and I cannot wait to learn along with you. There will be ups and downs but we will make it through by working together. If you have any questions, or recipes, please let me know. I cannot wait to meet you all and I look forward to the new year.
