Principal’s Welcome

Hello Hayfield!

It has been a busy few weeks leading up to the start of the 2020-2021 school year! We have inundated you with communication and information, asked for your patience and understanding, and are running a new learning management system (Schoology). Despite all of these challenges, we have worked together to successfully begin our virtual opening. Thank you for your grace as we walk through this journey side-by-side.

We continue to be a NEST of learners. This vision is what drives our daily work:

Nurturing all students by creating a supportive and safe learning environment.

Collaborating to educate students to be innovative problem solvers.

Encouraging students to soar by teaching them to be resilient and goal-directed individuals.

Helping students thrive as they act responsibly and ethically within their global community.

Communication will be more important now than ever before. Please be sure to communicate with your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns you might have. We also have an amazing student support team to assist with any social/emotional questions or concerns. They are:

Erin Smith – School Counselor for grades K, 2, 4, 5      eesmith@fcps.edu

Nikalette Lee – School Counselor for grades 1, 3, 6      ntlee@fcps.edu

David Schatz – School Psychologist                              dhschatz@fcps.edu

Jennifer Cann – School Social Worker                           jccann@fcps.edu

Our priority is building relationships with you and your student(s). We will foster these relationships through our Morning Meetings (Monday – Friday) and through our consistent communication. Please do not hesitate to reach out to a staff member at any time. We will continue to work hard to make this a positive experience for all of us.

Jessica Lewis and Samantha Goldstein

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education. Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6), Middle School (7-8), and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at cfreynolds@fcps.edu.

Immunizations and Physicals

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Code of Virginia requirements for immunizations and physicals for school entry have not been waived for School Year (SY) 2020-2021.

During this public health crisis, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) recognizes that it may be difficult for families to obtain access to timely healthcare for physicals and required immunizations. FCPS strongly encourages all families to contact their primary care physician or the Fairfax County Health Department immediately to schedule an appointment to meet these requirements.

As SY 2020-2021 will begin virtually for all students, FCPS will allow additional time for families to obtain and to submit to FCPS the necessary documentation for the required immunizations, tuberculosis screenings, physicals and Tdap. These requirements are outlined in Section 22.1-271.2  and Section 32.1-46 of the Code of Virginia.

For newly enrolling students not meeting the Code of Virginia requirements, FCPS will provide provisional access to virtual learning only. Students will not be permitted to access face-to-face instruction without meeting all compliance requirements and providing their school with documentation of immunizations, tuberculosis screenings and physicals and Tdap. All requirements must be met by October 8, 2020.

For students who are conditionally enrolled and have not completed the necessary immunizations as required by the Code of Virginia, FCPS will provide provisional access to virtual learning only. Schools will continue to notify families of remaining immunization requirements. Students may not participate in “in school” instruction and activities until meeting this requirement.

Physicals are required to be completed prior to admission regardless of whether a division is providing in person, hybrid or fully remote instruction. First-time public kindergarten or elementary school students will be admitted if such student can furnish, prior to admission, a comprehensive physical examination that was performed within the 12 months prior to the originally scheduled school reopening date. For students who are unable to meet this requirement, FCPS will provide provisional access to virtual learning only. Students may not participate in “in school” instruction and activities until meeting this requirement.

For questions about school entry requirements for physicals and/or immunizations for your child, please contact your school immediately.

Thank you,

Jessica Lewis

Hayfield Elementary School Principal

Math Instruction at Hayfield for the

2020-2021 School Year

As we begin the school year, the most important thing for teachers is building community and helping all students feel comfortable with the changes to our format and structure. To support this critical mission, we are not making any Advanced Math placement decisions within the first few weeks of school.

The Advanced Math program may look different this year, given our Distance Learning format and the abrupt end to in person instruction last year. In addition, we will be following guidance from the Virginia Department of Education regarding Advanced Math, which is as follows:

“Divisions are highly encouraged to re-examine acceleration practices, particularly during the 2020-2021 school year, to ensure that students have sufficient time to recover unfinished learning from the previous school year while still allowing adequate time for the development of knowledge and skills in the new grade level. Rushing students through missed content from the previous school year, while attempting to instruct in new content at an accelerated pace, could have detrimental results in student understanding during the upcoming school year. Students enrolled in accelerated mathematics courses with compacted curriculum (addresses more than one grade level of the Mathematics Standards of Learning) during the 2019-2020 school year and who are designated to move to another accelerated mathematics course in 2020-2021 have the potential to experience “doubly compacted” curriculum, which could compound learning disparities.”

The VDOE is urging caution in accelerating the pace of math instruction to ensure that students build a solid foundation for higher level math classes in the future. Please know that we will continue to meet the needs of each student, even if the way we do that looks different than it has in the past.

Your child may be asked to take some beginning of the year assessments as part of their asynchronous instruction. It is extremely important that the results of these assessment accurately represent what the student currently understands.

  • Please limit your help to technical issues or help with reading unfamiliar words.
  • If your child does not understand how to do a problem, that’s fine. Some of the questions may be things they haven’t learned yet. Do not tell your child how to do a problem. Just encourage them to do their best.

If you any questions, please contact our Math Resource Teacher, Sara Wilska (smwilska@fcps.edu), or your student’s classroom teacher.

Important Information About Receiving

Communication from

Fairfax County Public Schools

How can I make sure I receive emergency information from Fairfax County Public Schools?

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) communicates all emergency and essential information to parents via email. The information is also translated into eight languages: Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Information communicated via email includes:

  • School closings and delays
  • Attendance
  • Emergencies at school
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, phone, or internet outages at school
  • Bus delays
  • Testing dates

When providing an e-mail address to FCPS, please avoid using an educational (.edu-including fcps.edu), military (.mil) or government (.gov) email address. The security settings on government servers often block messages from FCPS. It is a best practice to not use work related email addresses; therefore, it is important to use an email address from another internet service provider such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.

How do I receive text messages from FCPS?

Parents can receive text messages for emergencies and essential information. Please make sure your parent cell phone numbers are listed in the “cell telephone” fields in the parent/guardian contact information section on the emergency care information form for each of your children.

Parents and guardians can view and update emergency contact information online using the weCare@school feature of FCPS 24-7 Learning. Standard message and data charges may apply for text messages depending on their cell phone service plan. More information.
