First Day Message

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

I don't know about you, but the night-before-school butterflies are flapping their wings wildly in my house (and not just for the children who live here either)! Last week, your child hopefully connected with their teacher and is feeling excited for their first day! Our teachers were so energized by the Virtual One-On-One Family visits they conducted last week. It was a joy to meet with students and their families after weeks of intensive online training and meetings.

If you have already met with your teacher, your child already has all the information they need to get to class this first morning.

I know some families were traveling or have just joined our school community. If your child hasn't yet connected with his or her teacher and needs a little help getting to the right place tomorrow, our "Virtual Front Office" will be open all day to help. Parents or students alike can click on this link if they lose their way:

At 9:00, all sixth graders will start their day at that link, and from there will be sent to their first specials class at 9:20.

Anytime from 9:20-3:00, any student who is disconnected or lost can visit the link above; administrators and office staff will be there to help get them back to their classrooms.

After a long summer, we can't wait for school to start again! Have a WONDERFUL FIRST DAY! If you wish to share any highlights from your child's first day, feel free to tweet them to @Canterbury_Wood with the hashtags, #Firstdayfairfax and #FCPSReady.

We are ready to partner with you to make this unique and unforgettable school year full of friends, fun and positive learning experiences for your children!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Still Need a Laptop?

We held four laptop distribution days in August and distributed hundreds of computers! We have added days for this week for families who were unable to pick up a laptop in August, or who might encounter difficulty with their own devices tomorrow.

Technology Help Desk

FCPS has a toll-free Parent Technology Help Desk to assist families with technology issues. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.) We have also created an online portal for older students and parents/guardians to request technology help.

Parental Consent for Digital Resources Due

At Canterbury Woods Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://canterburywoodses.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form https://isweb.fcps.edu/iscontacts/techpermform.cfm?secure where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year.

This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission.

Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

We will send information about our "First Day Packets" (other forms we need you to fill out) later this week.
