Little Run News: 9/4/20

little run strong

Dear Little Run Families,

Over the last three weeks, our staff has engaged in hours of professional learning, planning with colleagues and connecting with families. Our teachers have loved getting to meet their students during their Family Virtual Visits. A big thank you to our tech team and staff volunteers that have held more than 4 laptop distribution days and passed out almost 340 Student Take Home Kits! Our staff is excited and ready to begin the school year with you all on Tuesday, September 8th at 8:30 am.

Please know that although our school year is starting in a way that we could not have imagined at this time last year, we will continue to operate as one, unified school. Let’s continue to grant each other patience and grace as we navigate this first ever virtual start to the school year together.

We appreciate the hard work and flexibility of our staff and families and look forward to a school year like no other!

Little Run Strong,

Monica Mohr

Principal

Technology Help at Home

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, Fairfax County Public Schools is launching a new Parent Technology Help Desk, effective, Monday, August 24. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.

Beginning of Year Assessments

Our teachers will be assessing students through a variety of ways during virtual learning. Please do not assist your child with any assessments as it will provide us inaccurate information of what your child knows and is able to do independently. We appreciate your support with this!

Resources to Share with Childcare Providers

If your child is engaged in virtual learning outside of your home, please feel free to share these resources with your childcare provider.

There are many videos and technology tips that explain the various tools we will be using this fall. Videos will be added over time, so please ask them to check back often!

Meet Some of Our New Roadrunners!

charlotte

Charlotte Quigley- School Based Technology Specialist

Who chooses to become a Technology Specialist in the middle of a pandemic when all students are going to be learning Virtually? ME! I am so excited to be supporting the staff and teachers at Little Run this year with their Virtual Learning experience. I am also excited to be a part of such a wonderful community.

A little bit about me, I was a classroom teacher in FCPS for 7 years before transitioning to my new role here at Little Run. I taught 5th and 6th grades and loved working with kids of all ages. I am a FCPS graduate and graduated from Radford University too long ago! Please know I am here to support not only the children and staff at Little Run, but also the families! I can’t wait to hopefully meet students in person soon!

Debra Cockey- Band Teacher

Music has been a major part of my life as far back as I can remember.  I grew up listening to music that ran the gamut of the greats; Sinatra, Billy Joel The Beatles, and Motown, and was taken to performances from a young age.  When I started playing the clarinet in 6th grade I never looked back.  I hope to ignite that kind of spark in my band students at Little Run.  After 18 years in Fairfax County, I still love showing kids how much fun they can have while uncovering talents they never knew they had and I’m looking forward to getting to know the Little Run community.  I have 4 yr old twin boys that keep me laughing everyday, especially now that they are learning to cook with me while I take online classes with my favorite celebrity chefs!  Here’s to a great year!
