OES Weekly Message

Orientation

The first day of school is upon us – Tuesday, September 8!  Hooray!  Thank you to everyone for attending the Virtual Orientations on Thursday. It was so wonderful to see the happy, excited faces of our students and begin making connections – we have missed those sweet smiles!

Although this year looks different than any other year, we are dedicated to providing your child(ren) a memorable, interactive, engaging distance learning experience. Our staff has been engaging in learning and planning rich instruction in order to build connections with their students and to help foster new relationships with their peers.

Attendance Matters

In Virginia, public school students ages 5-18 are required to attend school regularly. Teachers will take attendance during learning sessions and ensure that all students are counted. Parents can assist with this process by:

  • Ensuring students log in to classes on time and throughout the day.
  • Calling or emailing the school attendance line if students are unable to participate.
  • Communicating any concerns to the school, such as difficulty logging in or accessing classes.
  • Reporting any hardship, such as student illness, or concern that might prevent the student from participating regularly.
  • Returning phone calls or emails when notified that students did not participate that day.
  • Ensuring that students submit assignments.

If your child is unable to log in to online instruction with a teacher, the teacher will be recording whole class instruction in the core subjects and specials and posting the video to their Google Classroom, so it can be viewed later. Videos can also be viewed multiple times to help students retain new information, as needed.

Teachers will work with parents to ensure that the transition to virtual learning is as smooth as possible.

Beginning of the Year Forms

Every school year we collect vital information from our families during the first few days and weeks of school.

Required Forms

Forms to Complete On-Line

Please fill out these forms electronically. Forms can be accessed through WeCare, scanned and emailed to Sandie Horton, student registrar at sghorton@fcps.edu.  Some of the forms are explained in greater detail below.

Emergency Care Form

Health Information Form

Homeless Student Referral Form

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms – Please complete asap

As the school year begins virtually, it is important that Emergency Care Forms and Health Forms for your student are updated as soon as possible. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHN) utilize the information contained in the health form to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

Both of these forms are required for all students for SY 20-21 and are available for electronic submission by parents via their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) accounts within the WeCare@School (WeCare) module.

SR&R Updates and SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form

Please review the Student Rights and Responsibilities and related resources at www.fcps.edu/srr.  After reviewing the information, fill out the SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form using this link.  The form must be filled out one time per student.

Positivity Project

This year, Oakton will continue implementing the Positivity Project(P2). P2 is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build strong relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. Every 1-2 weeks, students learn about a new character strength.

It is easier than ever for Oakton families to access P2 resources this year! The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Technology/Support for Families

Parent Technology Help Desk

On Monday, August 24, FCPS launched a toll-free Parent Technology Help Desk to assist families with technology issues. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also created an online portal for older students and parents/guardians to request technology help.
