Getting Ready to Start School!

This week's newsletter is filled with information to help ensure a smooth start to the school year. If you missed our Town Hall on Wednesday, we are sharing the information here. There are several forms that parents need to complete, and we've included information about how to take care of those important tasks. As always, if you need help or have a question, please contact us. You can call the school at 703-721-2100.

School Begins at 9:00am Every Morning

All students should log-in to their Google Meet session by 9:00am Monday-Friday. Teachers will take attendance and lead students in a Morning Meeting. If you are have trouble logging in, keep trying. Teachers are taking attendance throughout the day.  If you know that your child will not be able to get online, teachers will be recording lessons and posting them in their Google Classroom. Students can watch the videos in the evening and complete any work. Parents can call the school to let us know that their children watched the recorded sessions to get credit for their daily attendance in that way.

Below is the daily instructional schedule. You'll see breaks spread out across the day to give children time away from the screen. What's most important is that students are logged on at start time for each subject. During the first weeks, the session may not last the entire block. We are working on building students' stamina across the day.

ELA = English Language Arts

Content = Science or Social Studies

Independent Work = Teachers will assign work to do and may pull your child for a small group.

Specials = Art, Music, PE, Library, Discovery Studio These teachers will show students how to access their session in the first weeks.

Student Break = Time to step away from the screen

Food Pick Up: New Time

Meal pick-up will continue at Mount Eagle, but the hours are expanding. You can now come beginning at 8am through 12:30pm. Look for the tent set up in the parking lot.

Technology Support

We have distributed over 300 laptops in the past two weeks. And we are continuing to loan out Mi-Fi devices so that students can have internet access. If you still need internet access, please let us know. Using a hot spot on a phone is not enough. If you have internet through Cox or Verizon FIOS, you're good to go. Call the office at 703-721-2100 if you still need a computer and/or Mi-Fi.

If families have questions, FCPS has set up a Technology Help Desk. Tips for technology can be found here . The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents can also use this online portal to submit requests for technology assistance here: https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/

Band & Strings This Year

Yes, our upper grade students will have the opportunity to take instrumental music lessons. During the week of Sept 14, students in Grades 4, 5 & 6 will meet Ms. Walker, our strings teacher and Mr. Davis, our band teacher. They will ask students to fill out a form to show their interest and then work with families to get instruments to students.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/.  Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Carrie Reynolds, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at cfreynolds@fcps.edu.
