All Woodlawn Families

Dear Woodlawn Elementary Family,

The beginning of the school year is fast approaching, and we would like to thank you for your patience as we navigate this virtual start. This week has been a busy one at Woodlawn Elementary as we distributed about 400 laptops last week! Additionally, teachers are having a great time connecting with families and inviting them to our virtual Back to School Night September 14th.

Woodlawn Elementary is welcoming over 100 students who are new to school and new to virtual learning.  We know that many parents are concerned with how their young learners will engage in instruction for the entire school day. Please know that we are working diligently to develop instructional opportunities that are meaningful, engaging and that tier instruction to help students build stamina. We are all partners in the learning. We will build in breaks and activities to help your child acclimate to learning online and to develop a sense of accomplishment and pride as a virtual learner. If you are worried about your child, please communicate with your child’s classroom teacher.

Remember, we are in this together and we are going to have an amazing year!

Best Regards,

Laura Elliott, Principal

FCPS Parent Support Portal

Getting started with technology can be daunting and we know parents will often ask, “Where did I put that information?” FCPS has developed an amazing Technology Support for Families site that provides tips for learning at home, parent tech support, as well as how parents can access student logins, passwords resetting, using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, and so much more. Just click here!

FCPS has also launched a Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and it will be answered by staff from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Woodlawn Elementary School, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Our teachers have been working hard to create engaging and fun activities that build community in our classroom environments for our students. These activities may include the use of digital resources/applications on the first day of school. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://woodlawnes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources.

Included on this page is also a link to a form where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not his/her student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools.  We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form by Tuesday, September 8, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

The consent form consists of the following steps:

  • Parents/guardians access and login to the online form using your child’s student ID number and your parent email or phone number.
  • Parents/guardians will verify their identity by entering a security code sent to parent’s email address or mobile phone.
  • Digital signature agreement - Parents/guardians must agree to using a digital signature.
  • Parents/guardians respond to the form, either consent to use of all the digital tools on the Woodlawn ES list or do not give consent to use one or more of the digital tools on the list. If no, please provide comments in the box provided. You will receive a confirmation email once the form is submitted.
  • Please remember to complete this for all your Woodlawn students at both the upper and primary schools.

Student Attendance in a Virtual Setting

School begins on September 8 and you do not want to miss a moment! Yet, we know that a virtual opening may pose challenges for families.  FCPS has developed the following guidelines for parents:

In Virginia, public school students aged 5-18 are required to attend school regularly whether they are participating in a virtual or in-person setting. Teachers will take attendance during learning sessions and ensure that all students are counted. To support their efforts, parents can:

  • Ensure that their student(s) logs in to classes on time, and throughout the day.
  • Call or email the school attendance line if their student(s) are unable to participate.
  • Communicate any concerns to the school, such as difficulty logging in or having access to FCPS classes.
  • Report any hardship, such as student illness or any issue that might prevent the student from participating regularly.
  • Return phone calls or emails when notified that their student(s) did not participate that day.
  • Ensure the school has up-to-date parent communication information. If your child is unable to login to live, face-to-face online instruction with their teacher, the teacher will be recording whole class instruction and posting the video so it can be viewed at a different time. The video can also be used to provide review for all students.

More information about attendance is available online
