Justice Newsletter - August 30, 2020

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

We are one week away from welcoming our students back to Justice High School. This newsletter contains lots of information to help you and your child prepare for the start of the school year on September 8th.

Bell Schedule: Below is the Justice bell schedule. Students will be engaged Tuesday through Friday with four synchronous classes per day. Synchronous instruction will include teacher-led instruction, collaborative work time, and independent work time that may also include targeted and small-group support.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are “Red Days” and students will meet with their odd day classes, periods 1, 3, 5 and 7. Wednesdays and Fridays are “Blue Days” and students will meet with their even day classes, periods 2, 4, 6, and 8. Each class block will be 80 minutes in length and will be held through BBCU. Period 4 will continue to be our social emotional learning block (SEL) and Den Time.

Mondays will be used for intervention, enrichment and support. All students will be provided with asynchronous work, to be completed outside of regular class time and may be completed on Mondays. In addition, on Mondays, all students are expected to login with their period 4 teacher between 9:00-9:30am. Students should plan to attend class virtually for the duration of the period and attendance will be taken.

Student Schedules: On Wednesday, September 2, student schedules will be available for students and parents to view via StudentVue and ParentVue

Virtual Opening: Justice will host a Virtual Opening on Thursday, September 3 beginning at 9:00am. By Wednesday, students will receive a phone call and an email to their fcpsschools.net account from their period 4 teacher welcoming them to the new year and detailing how they can access the event.

Rolling Gradebook: Given the uncertainty of schedules and virtual learning for all students during the 2020-21 school year, our school has decided teachers will use a rolling (cumulative) gradebook. A rolling gradebook allows for progress towards a final mark that captures the total picture of student grades, regardless of length of quarter or number of assignments in each quarter. Acknowledging that the coming school year begins on a later start date and will have both synchronous and asynchronous learning, it is important to utilize a gradebook type that provides maximum flexibility and ensures equitable grading practices to meet the academic and social- emotional needs of all students.

A rolling gradebook is an approved gradebook type per Secondary Grading & Reporting Policy and numerous FCPS schools/teams/teachers already utilize a rolling gradebook.

To learn more details about a rolling gradebook to include how it will look in SIS Student/ParentVUE, please take time to review the following video. Teachers will communicate grading design and policies via the course syllabus. Students/parents are encouraged to reach out directly to the teacher with additional questions.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me or any member of our admin team if you have any questions.

Bell Schedule

Parent Question Corner

Last week's families submitted the following questions. Thank you for your questions.

  1. Do you have any information about Senior Portrait pictures? Will the school be able to coordinate the opportunity to get senior pictures taken? We are in the process of scheduling senior portraits and obtaining health and safety protocols for this event. We will send information out soon.
  2. Are there any forms that need to be filled out before the school year starts? See below under Early Bird Forms.
  3. Will 10th graders be taking the PSAT? Right now, 10th graders are not scheduled to take PSAT in October. If more information becomes available, we will notify families.

Please continue to submit general questions. We will share answers in our upcoming News You Choose Newsletter. You can find the Google Form here. If you have student specific questions, please feel free to reach out to any of our administrators. We are happy to help

Visitor Protocols

Please be aware most teachers and staff are working remotely and will not be on campus; therefore, meetings and conferences largely will be online. We also understand a unique circumstance may necessitate a campus visit. Visitors to the Justice HS building must have an appointment in advance and complete the visitor questionnaire found here. Upon arrival at the school, please park in the visitor lot in front of our main entrance #1. You will need to ring the doorbell. Staff will respond to your call and confirm your appointment. If you do not have an appointment, staff will administer the health questionnaire prior to entry. All visitors are required to wear masks, check in and out at the front office, and maintain social distance throughout their visit.

Early Bird Forms

We understand how the beginning of the year can be overwhelming with forms. Here are some you can access now.

  • Emergency Care Form required for all returning FCPS students to review and update if needed.
  • Emergency Care Card required for students NEW to FCPS.
  • FCPSOn Computer Opt Out Form: Only for students who are not planning to use a school laptop. We highly recommend you use the FCPS laptop because all software and other applications will be loaded and accessible. Software used by FCPS and Justice HS cannot be loaded on personal devices.

More information will be sent later for other forms such as parental signatures needed for the Students Rights and Responsibilities Form, Medical Needs, Residency Verification, and Software Parental Consent Form.

Student Laptops

This week, we will be offering additional opportunities to pick up laptops. Students will be able to pick up laptops from Mon-Thurs 8:30am-2:00pm in main office as well as on Wednesday, September 2nd from 4:00pm-6:00pm.  Pickup will take place outside of door #1 and appointments are not necessary.  If students have laptops from Glasgow Middle School, they may bring them and drop them off with us when picking up their Justice Laptop.

Masks and social distancing will be required and if students would answer “yes” to any of the questions below, we will reschedule for a later time for laptop pick up.

      • Do you have a cough and/or sore throat?
      • Have you had a fever in the last 72 hours (3 days)?
      • Do you have any shortness of breath or is it hard for you to breathe?
      • Is anyone in your house ill with a fever or a cough?
