All of the Oak Hill Specialists are very excited to start this year and can’t wait to see all their students again. Below is information on how students will access their specialists classrooms!
K-5 Specials: Students in grades K-5 will access their specials class through their homeroom teacher’s BBCU link. Students will not need any additional links for specials (Music, Art, PE and Chinese).
6th Grade Specials: Students in 6th grade will access specials through the Oak Hill Specialists course in Blackboard. Using the BBCU Sessions Link tab on the left side of the page, students will select the appropriate specialist class from the list. Students will need to remember which special to attend each day of the week.
Grades 4-6 Band and Strings: All students in band and strings will access their class through the Oak Hill Specialists course in Blackboard. Using the BBCU Sessions Link tab on the left side of the page, students will select either Ms. Geers (strings) or Mrs. Davis (band) from the list.
Family Choice Fun and Intervention/Enrichment with Specialists: Students will access additional small groups and choice activities through the Oak Hill Specialists course in Blackboard. Using the BBCU Sessions Link tab on the left side of the page, students will select the appropriate specialist teacher from the list.

Why are schools taking attendance during virtual learning?
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all schools to take attendance during virtual learning this school year. FCPS must take attendance Mondays through Fridays, unless there is a student holiday on a Monday. Students aged 5-18 must attend school every day school is in session, unless they are excused from school. To support this, parents must report absences to school each time the student may be absent.
How will schools take attendance during virtual learning?
For Elementary School: On Mondays, elementary students may check in with their teachers via a morning meeting. When they log in, their teacher will confirm their attendance. Tuesdays through Fridays, students will check in with their teachers the same way. If students are unable to participate on any given school day, parents must report the absence to the school office.
If your child is unable to login to live, face-to-face online instruction with their teacher, the teacher will be recording the class and posting the video within Blackboard/Google Classroom so it can be viewed at a different time. The video can also be used to provide review for all students.

As we countdown to the first day of virtual school, some families may be feeling anxious about this change to the normal routine. In this week's Healthy Minds podcast we hear from Bethany Koszelak, a mental health specialist for FCPS. Bethany talks to us about self-care and mental wellness practices families can use to cope with any stress they might be experiencing. She also has some advice for parents about how to speak with their children about their feelings.
From the Healthy Minds Blog: Supporting Your Children at Home During Virtual Learning
As we return to school on September 8 for the start of the 2020-21 school year, all students will participate in virtual learning. While teachers are working hard to improve lessons and delivery of instruction, here are some strategies that may help support your children at home during virtual learning

The new Supporting Return to School program has been developed by the county’s Office for Children in hopes of ensuring that all families have equitable access to the services they need to support children’s virtual learning. Children in kindergarten through sixth grade may attend this program from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and complete their virtual learning, as well as participate in other programming throughout the day. Although Oak Hill is not one of the locations for this program, families may apply for their child(ren) to attend a program at another local school. For more information, click this link or call the Office for Children at 703 449-8989.
We will be holding two virtual Back-to-School Nights on September 15th and 16th. Below is the schedule. We will include links for these in next week's Wolf News.
