Laptop Distribution Information

We will be distributing laptops to all students new to Herndon High school! The distribution will occur on 8/25 and 8/27.  Strict social distancing will be observed during this time, and students/parents are required to wear masks.  If a student or family plans to travel to school on foot, please approach the parking lot parallel to Dranesville Road and follow staff directions.

We ask all students/parents to bring the following information written on a piece of paper/index card/post it: Student’s full name, student ID and grade level.  This will help minimize interaction and ensure a quick and smooth laptop distribution process.

Each student is assigned a time slot based on last name, see below for your student’s time slot.

Laptop distribution will be held on the parking lot parallel to Dranesville Road. If you have any questions, please call 703-810-2200

Make-Up Day for All Grade Levels

8:30-11:30am All Students

What you need to know:

  • Please place a piece of paper or sticky note inside the cover of one textbook with your student’s FULL LEGAL name and student ID number. This will ensure accurate record-keeping of your student’s books. This is also critical for limiting the amount of time staff remain within close proximity to you and others.
  • If your child has a calculator provided by Herndon High School and is not enrolled in a math class this year, you can drop the calculator off as well.
  • Textbook Drop-off will take place in the front of the school. You will enter the school through the Kiss & Ride entrance (second left from Bennett Street) and turn left in front of the school. Staff will be at Entrance #1 to collect textbooks.
  • You will remain in your vehicle for this drop-off event. Please wear a mask or place the items in an area of the car that will not require staff to be in close proximity if you are not wearing a mask (i.e. trunk or back seat).
  • If you or your student will be arriving on foot, s/he should follow staff direction at Entrance #1 of the school and remain physically distanced from others.

Textbook redistribution will occur after September 8th.

Dual Enrollment Update

Important Dual Enrollment Course Updates:

If your student is taking a Dual Enrollment (DE) class at Herndon, through an academy, or on the Online Campus for the 2020-2021 school year, please review this important update.

  • Due to school closure and a virtual start to the school year, NOVA has updated their process for dual enrollment registration. This process will replace the paper intent form.
  • Please follow the instructions outlined below with the step by step guides attached.
  • You will also receive an email with instructions sent to you and your student from Nile Shaikh – Herndon Dual Enrollment Liaison
  • Your student must be registered as a NOVA student in order to receive college credit.
  • The deadline to register for your student’s Dual Enrollment class(es) is Tuesday, September 1

Follow these steps to register:

Step 1: Apply to NOVA – Use STEP 1: NOVA APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS step by step guide provided to ensure accurate registration.

  • Please write down your NOVA EMPLID (you will receive this once you apply to NOVA). You will need the EMPLID to register for your Dual Enrollment class.
  • If you have already applied to NOVA or are a returning DE student, you do not need to re-apply. You will need access to your 7-digit EMPLID for Step 2.
  • After applying to NOVA, please wait at least 1 hour for your NOVA account to be registered in their application system before proceeding to Step 2.

Step 2: Create a DualEnroll.com account – Use this STEP 2: Dualenroll.com APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS step by step guide provided to ensure accurate registration.

  • Use this guide to find the correct Herndon HS, Academy, or Online Campus class and its associated NOVA class.
  • Once you select your high school, the DE class offerings will populate for you to select.
  • The system then allows virtual communication to be shared back and forth between NOVA and the high school, ensuring all the necessary items are needed to register

Placement Testing

During the 2020 COVID-19 emergency, NOVA has temporarily approved Dual Enrollment Student Admissions. This measure adds flexibility to use additional measures for dual enrollment admission and placement. The policy may be used only for admission and placement for the 20-21 school year.

Students can use qualifying PSAT, SAT and ACT scores for placement for this fall. They can also use a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Or they can take the VPT practice tests. Only one placement is required.

Details for NOVA’s Dual Enrollment Placement Policy can be found here: NOVA Dual Enrollment 2020 Placement Policy

More Information about Dual Enrollment can be found here: FCPS Dual Enrollment Student Google Site

If you have any questions, please contact Nile Shaikh (Administrative Lead Counselor/Herndon Dual Enrollment Liaison) at nmshaikh@fcps.edu.

Your student will receive an email from a teacher on August 27th. If your child has not received this email by the end of the day on August 27th, please connect with your child’s counselor to ensure that they get the information that is needed for the virtual orientation.  In addition, here is some information for parents on technology tips for student success. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/distance-learning/instruction/learning-at-home

From the Library:

  • Great books are as close as your phone or other device! All students have access to a wide variety of ebooks and e-audiobooks through your individual Destiny accounts. Use your regular school credentials to log on here, or download the MackinVIA app. Rising 9th graders’ Destiny accounts will link to Herndon High School’s library instead your prior middle school by the end of June.  The home page of Destiny includes suggestions for summer reading for English classes, and some great books and resources that can support students interested in antiracism.

Mental Wellness Consultation 2020

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will continue to offer mental wellness consultations throughout the summer. If you have concerns about your child’s well-being or if your child would like to speak with a school psychologist or school social worker, please request a consultation.  Our FCPS mental health providers are available to help families get needed support through a 45-minute phone consultation or through secure video conferencing. Appointments are open to all FCPS families.

Consultations are offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social-emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. Information about community resources will also be made available.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions; as well as academic challenges such as organization, time-management, or adjusting to a new school.

We encourage parents to take advantage of this service. Click here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 571-423-4276.
