LBSS Summer Updates - August 22, 2020

Message from Dr. Smith

This week we welcomed students to campus to pick up yearbooks, return LBSS items and we distributed 2,000 laptops.  It was a great opportunity to connect with our families and help them get ready for the 2020-21 school year.  With our staff this week we engaged in learning opportunities around how to best engage students in a virtual learning environment.  Our staff heard an inspiring message from educational author John Meehan on ways to increase engagement in the classroom and help make learning relevant and fun.  We will continue to support our teachers as they plan a successful start to the school year in a virtual setting.

There are important announcements in this weeks newsletter for all students.  I want to highlight the Parent Academy that provides a series of virtual events for families to connect with our staff on various topics to include how to survive learning in a virtual setting, meeting our administrative team, Family Life Education (FLE) and Special Education.  Also, mark your calendars for September 2nd!  Our Back to School Orientation website will be live for families to view videos from our staff to introduce themselves and explain more about the course they will teach for the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, all students will be joining their advisory teachers on September 2nd at 9:00 am for a live orientation to ensure they are ready for school on September 8th.

We are excited to get the school year started and have several opportunities to connect in the upcoming weeks.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor, administrator, Mrs. Kearns or myself if you have questions.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Thank you to all of our staff that support Laptop Distribution this week!

SAT School Day Test for 12th Graders

On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, Lake Braddock Secondary School 12th graders will have the opportunity to take the SAT School Day test. FCPS will cover the cost for any 12th-grade student to take the SAT. The optional essay component and subject tests will not be offered on this date.

To assist in planning for this test administration and FCPS bus transportation needs, families are asked to complete this SAT School Day Intent to Participate form by Monday, August 24. Only those students wishing to test should complete the form. A translated version of the form content may be found on the SAT School Day Intent webpage.

General information about the SAT test format is available on the College Board webpage. September 23 has been designated for asynchronous learning, so students who choose to take the SAT will not miss synchronous learning time with their teachers.

We will share more details about test day schedules, bus transportation, and specific safety protocols in the coming weeks. Final confirmation of SAT School Day testing will be based on health department guidance in September.

If you have questions about the SAT School Day administration on Wednesday, September 23, please contact Lake Braddock Secondary School Assessment Coach, Jennifer Bury, at JABury@fcps.edu .

We are excited about the start of the 2020-2021 school year. This was an awesome Laptop Distribution week for our rising 7th -9th graders and students new to the high school. Health Forms

Health Information and Emergency Care Forms

As the school year begins virtually, it is important that Emergency Care Forms and Health Forms for your student are updated as soon as possible. These forms are critical in the early identification of students who may need healthcare support in the educational environment. Along with the development of Healthcare Plans (HCP) and Action Plans, the Public Health Nurses (PHN) utilize the information contained in the health form to develop teaching strategies for FCPS staff in order to meet the requirements of Regulation 2104 Health Services-School Health Related Needs.

Both of these forms are required for all students for SY 20-21 and are available for electronic submission by parents via their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) accounts within the WeCare@School (WeCare) module.

The Lake Braddock Shared Vision

Our new Shared Vision was crafted last year with a focus on developing the skills and knowledge that are essential to be successful in our dynamic world. Through our visioning process being a Connected, Adaptable, Resilient, and Engaged learner were identified as our overarching skills that were essential for students. With those skills in mind, #BruinsCARE was created. Caring for all our Bruins and building these skills will be our focus. This will be our guiding theme for the year as we work to support and empower our students.

FCPS 24-7 Blackboard Email Contact

On August 17th, all student email addresses in FCPS 24/7 Blackboard will be automatically changed to each student’s individual @fcpsschools.net email address. Students, their parents, and staff will not be able to change those email addresses in FCPS 24-7 Blackboard. Since teachers may send student announcements through Blackboard, students should log into their @fcpsschools.net email accounts frequently for these important messages teachers during the school year.

JUMP START

Please do not miss out on this warm welcome opportunity for all incoming 7th grade and new 8th grade students  at Lake Braddock Secondary School, which serves to be an opportunity for students to meet face-to-face with some of our amazing LBSS staff and socialize with their fellow Bruins as we all gear up for Virtual Fall 2020.

Our Jump Start 2020 webpage is up and running – ready to be navigated by all newcomers, looking to familiarize themselves with everything Lake Braddock and ease the overall transition to middle school.
