Annandale Community Insider - August 9

Annandale Community:

The Virginia Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane announced recently that annual school accreditation for the 2021-2022 academic year will be waived. He stated that, “Waiving annual accreditation for a second year will allow our schools to focus on assessing the impact of the shut down on students, academically and on their social and emotional well-being,” We are grateful that the state has recognized the need to prioritize the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of our students. These will remain the foundation upon which we will build the best virtual learning experience we can for our students.

Our counselors “returned” this week and have been hammering out the final details of student schedules. They are also working with Assistant Principal Monica Bentley to plan our Freshman & New Student Orientation. A major focus of this will be community building among our new students. We recognize the importance of a social network and are purposefully building opportunities to make connections into our work. More details about orientation will be shared soon.

Laptop distribution for 9th graders and students new to Annandale will take place from Monday, August 24 through Friday, August 28 from 8:30am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. Students will need to schedule an appointment to pick up their laptop. Stay tuned for the appointment link, which will be featured in next week’s Insider and sent out individually to every 9th grade student.

Last week we asked you about your experience of distance learning this past spring and its successes and challenges. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We heard that you appreciated our school-wide Distance Learning Hub because it created a single point of entry to all lessons. Many of you mentioned that while you appreciated the overall communication from the school, more specific communication around the expectations for each class would help you support your students in distance learning.

We appreciate your input and will keep it in mind as we create systems and structures for the coming year. This is new for all of us, but I am confident that as long as we work together and continue to keep our students at the center of our work, we will only get better and better. If you have not yet had an opportunity to, please take a moment to complete this parent feedback form to help shape our approach.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
