WAKEFIELD FOREST ES MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Wakefield Forest Families,

This summer I have thought a great deal about our students and all of you. As a community we have been facing challenges since March that continue to shift and change daily. The uncertainty can create a great deal of anxiety for us as adults and for our kids as well. I keep coming back to this Mother Teresa quote – “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” I am certainly grateful to be leading in a community that values this ideal through our partnership.

We will host a virtual family session on Monday, August 10, 2020 at 3:30 PM and Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 9:00 AM. At these sessions, we will review recent updates and answer questions about the 2020-2021 school year. These sessions will cover the same information. Thank you for signing in with your first and last name; this helps me with follow-up. Please join me here: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/f3a0b4d64aad4bb4a6a95aefc8276439

Thank you.

Sharyn Prindle
Principal

Family Session - Virtual
We will host a virtual family session on Monday, August 10, 2020 at 3:30 PM and Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 9:00 AM. At these sessions, we will review recent updates and answer questions about the 2020-2021 school year. These will cover the same information. Grade Level Virtual Schedules
We will begin our instructional day promptly at 8:30 AM daily. Students should plan to be in their learning spaces prior to 8:30 to ensure they are ready to begin on time. Based on the developmental needs of our students, we have included screen breaks throughout the day. We have also intentionally frontloaded the day and kept a consistent lunch/break time to support our families. Our drafted virtual schedules are posted on the home page of the school website under announcements: https://wakefieldforestes.fcps.edu/

Learning Pods
As a school and PTA we are unable to support families in creating learning pods. We do understand that this is a challenging time to set up students for success. However, facilitating these groups is outside of our purview.

Not returning to WFES for SY 20-21?
For membership and staffing purposes, we would like to hear from families who are not returning to Wakefield Forest in September for the 20-21 school year. If your children (K-6) will not be attending WFES in the fall, please email Ms. Holmes directly at ksholmes@fcps.edu and let her know.

Registration
We are continuing to register new families. Wakefield Forest is open by appointment only. Families can schedule a registration appointment by contacting ksholmes@fcps.edu.

School Supplies
If you ordered school supplies through the PTA, they will be delivered to the school and we will schedule an opportunity for you to pick them up. We have modified the school supplies we think students will need in a virtual environment. These are posted on our school website on the homepage under announcements: https://wakefieldforestes.fcps.edu/

We want all of our students to have access to what they need; if your family needs support in getting supplies, please reach out to our school counselors Nancy Garcia-Henderson nagarciahend@fcps.edu or Chelsea Boateng cmboateng@fcps.edu.

Special Education
Families who have a student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan will be contacted by their assigned case manager in August and early September to discuss what updates may be needed to the IEP or 504 plan. Special education services and accommodations will be provided in our virtual format. Staff do not return to work until August 14, 2020.

Technology
• Information on technology distribution will come out in August. In the survey FCPS sent out earlier this month, you were asked to indicate if your child had access to a computer and to wifi. We will have a laptop available for every student who requests one. Wifi will only be available to families who do not have access currently, as there are very limited devices. If you need to update this information, please email ksholmes@fcps.edu by August 13, 2020.

• Families who have a WFES laptop at home should do the following once per week beginning this week:
o Plug the device into an outlet.
o Turn the device on and let it boot up.
o Ensure it is connected to the internet at that location.
o Let the device sit for 30 minutes. No additional logins or activities are required.

Woodson Pyramid Equity Conversation
Wakefield Forest ES families are invited to participate in a shared conversation around Cultural Proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness in the Woodson pyramid on August 11 at 7-8 pm. This town hall will be facilitated by Equity Leads and administrators from each school and will allow schools to draw similarities for future work around equity and Cultural Proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness throughout our pyramid schools. Each school will hold a follow-up town hall at another time to share specific actions happening in each individual school to address Cultural Proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness. A link to this conversation will be sent to families on Tuesday, August 11.
