Update from Dr. Smith

Bruin Families!

I have some important news and upcoming events to share with you this week.

First, I shared recently that Dr. Jim Patrick, our Director of Student Activities, has been named the Principal of Longfellow Middle School.  We are grateful for Jim's service and dedication to Lake Braddock and the Activities Office. We wish him the best in his new endeavor.

Please join us in welcoming Janice Pritchett as the Acting Director of Student Activities.  Janice is currently the Assistant Director of Student Activities and we are excited to have her step into this new role next week.

The Virtual Bell Schedule for the 2020-21 school year has been finalized.  Below is a graphic that provides the times and additional information.

Next week we will collect laptops from Middle School students who received one in the Spring.  Individual emails were sent to families this week regarding this collection.  Staff will be at Door 5 on Monday, August 3rd from 9 am to 11 am.  If you need a different time to drop off your laptop, please contact Lindsey Kearns at lmkearns@fcps.edu.

One important event next week is the Lake Braddock Pyramid Listening Session that will take place on Monday night.  We want to provide an opportunity for families to share their experiences as we work to provide a welcoming community for all.

In the next few weeks, we are looking forward to welcoming our teachers and staff back to kickoff a great school year.  As a community, we establish a Shared Vision last year that will guide our work this upcoming school year and for future years.  We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to connect with you all soon.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

The Lake Braddock Shared Vision

At the start of the 2019-2020 school year, Lake Braddock set out to develop a new shared vision of learning. A Shared Visioning Committee led the process by considering the questions: what is the story of learning we are currently telling and what is the story of learning we want to tell? Guided by FCPS’ Portrait of a Graduate and the VASCD’s Profile of a Virginia Classroom, the committee gathered input from all stakeholders, reviewed school data, and conducted visits to other schools and school systems to craft our new vision for learning. To learn more about how our new vision was developed and how our new path was charted, please view our Shared Vision video.

Listening Session

Lake Braddock Pyramid Listening Session

The Lake Braddock Pyramid administrators (Lake Braddock SS, Sangster ES, Cherry Run ES, White Oaks ES, Burke School, Kings Park ES, Kings Glen ES, and Ravensworth ES) will host a virtual community chat on Monday, August 3rd  from 7pm-8pm on Blackboard Collaborate. The purpose of this discussion is to provide a space and platform for our community members to share openly and candidly about the strengths and needs of our community schools as we work to create a welcoming environment that is supportive of all students and families. Our hope is to continue to grow our partnership with you and better address the needs and concerns of our students and families in the Lake Braddock Pyramid.

Please look for a link to the virtual community chat which will be sent on Monday, August 3rd. We look forward to this opportunity to come listen, learn, and hear from one another.

VHSL announces sports/activities plan for 2020-21

The VHSL Executive Committee meeting voted this week to move forward with Model 3 in its re-opening of sports and activities for the 2020-21 school year. Model 3 delays all VHSL sports and activities until December 14 and adopts the Condensed Interscholastic Plan.  This model leaves all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.

Model 3 – Condensed Interscholastic Plan.

  • Season 1 (Winter) December 14 – February 20 (First Contest Date – December 28)
    • basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim/dive, wrestling
  • Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1)
    • cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball
  • Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26 (First Contest Date – April 26)
    • baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field

“We all understand the physical and mental health benefits of getting our students back to a level of participation. The Condensed Interscholastic Plan Leaves open the opportunity to play all sports in all three seasons if Virginia moves beyond Phase III and/or Phase III guidelines are revised and High Risk Activities are allowed,” said VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun.  “This plan also allows schools the opportunity to open the year and get school started and deal with issues such as schedules, academic plans, transportation, dealing with possible outbreaks of COVID in the school.

“The VHSL will continue to work closely with the best available information and directives provided by the Governor, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).” Haun said.

7th grade Jump Start

We are happy to share that our Jump Start site is now up and running!  Since we cannot all be together this summer for our traditional Jump Start Program, we wanted to create a virtual opportunity for students to explore more about Lake Braddock and receive some helpful tips for a successful middle school experience.  To access the Jump Start site, CLICK HERE, or visit the main page of the Lake Braddock website and look for the Jump Start announcement (Coming Soon!).

Be sure to check back in August as we will be offering virtual opportunities for students to connect!  As we learn more about the opening of school this year, we will continue to update our Jump Start site as needed.

Returning Middle School Laptops

Rising 8th & 9th graders who received a school-issued laptop in the Spring will need to return those laptops on Monday, August 3rd, from 9am - 11am.  We will be collecting those laptops at door 5.
