Wise Words 7/31

Message from Mr. DeSmyter

Hello Shrevewood Family,

Thank you to everyone who joined our Parent Coffee on Monday. We had over 100 participants attend the session. Our intention was to provide our community with the information we have to this date. The slide deck and answers to the questions are below for you to review. Our next Parent Coffee is August 11 at 4:30pm. We look forward to providing you all with more detailed information about our virtual start the 2020-2021 school year. We are committed to you and to your children and will work to innovate, adapt and grow together with you.

Now that we are clear in our path for this first quarter, we will be working on all of the logistics for a successful and exciting start to the year. As the details get figured out, we will share with you all that you need to know. Please know that we will need until later in August to get firm plans in place. Your patience is hugely appreciated. We will have lots to share and lots to be excited about!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Joshua DeSmyter

Principal

When will laptops be distributed?
Principal DeSmyter and our TSPECC, Tim Nguyen are meeting to discuss an efficient plan for delivering laptops.

How much flexibility will teachers have to create large/small groups, give asynchronous assignments within a long day on the computer?
We are working to develop a master schedule that includes breaks, lunch, and specials for our students. We anticipate small groups being a part of the synchronous learning time within the schedule.

Which specials will be offered?
PE, music, art, FLES

When can we collect our yearbooks?
If you are interested in a yearbook email darlenhowell@gmail.com

Can the kindergarten and 3rd grade lunch schedules match since we have kids in both?
We are working to develop a master schedule that makes things realistic for our students, parents, teachers, and staff. We will collaborate with our teachers and staff to make sure we have considered a variety of angles and share this with the community towards the end of August.

How will students and teachers get to know each other in this virtual start?
We are going to model making connections with students during professional development that teachers can use to get to know their students.

Will there be an opportunity for community connections?
We are in frequent communication with our PTA and working on ways for us to make connections until we can come back face to face.

Should we definitely get a laptop from school or can we use our own?
All students will be able to receive a laptop from FCPS. If students are using an FCPS laptop we have the opportunity to fix anything that goes wrong with their technology. We will not be able to fix personal technology. Families have a preference as to whether or not they will use the FCPS laptop.

Has the school bell time been shifted earlier?
Currently the start time is 9:20 pending a school board vote on 7/28

Will strings be available to rising 4th graders?
There is more information to come this week on Strings

When will class lists be finalized/released?
Yes, later in August. We have collaborated with teachers and staff to create class lists. Our registrar will put them in our system and make available to families.

Will there be an opportunity for curbside library book check out?Yes. Additionally, we are looking into other ways to get resources to students.

What platform will we use?
Presently, Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and Google Classroom are our primary platforms.

Can you say more about attendance and grading?
Through collaboration with our teachers we will work to create a schedule that allows for frequent breaks and seamless instruction. Our goal is to make student’s virtual school day as smooth as possible. Teachers will be checking for understanding and working together in collaborative teams to assess and grade student work.

Do Kindergartners receive laptops?
Yes. We will work collaboratively to provide videos and resources for students. Some resources to get started can be found here:

https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/technology-literacy

Can you clarify the 9:00-2:00 schedule versus the 3-3.5 recommended hours?
The 3-3.5 hours refers to synchronous learning. The 9:00-2:00 schedule includes synchronous learning and additional time for breaks and lunch.

What additional materials will be provided?
We are exploring different ways to provide bags of materials to students such as math manipulatives, whiteboards, or books.

Will the daily schedule and roster be shared?
We will communicate in a way that makes all families feel comfortable. Families will be informed of the daily schedule and we will work with room parents and FCPS to coordinate anything additional. We want to make sure we follow privacy and confidentiality guidelines.

Will classes remain if we come back to face to face learning?
This will depend on guidelines from FCPS and our team will make this adjustment if the time comes.

How will reading and math be assessed for the younger grades?
Math will be assessed on an online platform. The language arts office is still developing an assessment plan to support students K-6.

Will classes at each grade level be receiving the same content? Yes. Will there be choice boards? We have not finalized that yet.

Can families pick up the supplies ordered from Sprout?
We will collaborate with the PTA to either pick up the supplies or leave them at school.

Have an SWES computer?

FCPS plans to offer a device to any student that needs one to access virtual learning. If you have a child entering sixth or seventh grade and has a Shrevewood ES laptop, we will be collecting it as new devices will be offered to rising 6th and 7th graders. Mr. Nguyen will ensure the laptop your return is ready to be given to a rising Kindergarten – Fifth Grade Shrevewood student. If you have questions about your child’s device, please email Mr. Nguyen at TVNguyen1@fcps.edu. Information regarding distribution of new devices will be shared in August.
