Gunston Gazette

Updates and Important Dates

As we shared last week, we are preparing for a 100% virtual start to the 2020-2021 school year. The online instruction model will be the same one offered to families in the county survey.  We will share more specific information next week at our community meeting.

  • For distance learning, our first priority is to provide access and equity in the learning experience for each of our students. We have strengthened our digital learning model so that we can provide a rigorous and engaging virtual learning program with greater connections for all students at all grade levels.
  • Gunston Staff will be providing parent workshops and resources to connect and support families while they direct their students learning.

School Supply Lists

Students will need supplies during virtual instruction. We will update supply lists if needed as we transition to the in person model.  You may consider taking advantage of summer sales and buying extras for your child. Grade level supply lists can be found here.

Please email Kristen Rucinski at  krucinski@fcps.edu if you need support with school supplies for your child this year.

Technology and Internet Update

As we prepare for the virtual opening of the school year on September 8th, we are committed to making sure that every Eagle in grades Pre-K-6 will have access to appropriate computer technology before the start of school.

  • FCPS has provided NEW laptops for all students in grades 5-6 at Gunston for the 20-21 schoolyear. These have arrived at the school and Mr. Payne is getting them ready to be distributed after August 17th.  We will contact all families to schedule a computer check-out time.
  • The new computers will allow us to roll-down newer, updated computers to our younger learners. Once the returned computers have been updated by Mr. Payne, we will contact families to schedule pickup for students in grades PreK-4.
  • Mifi units will be available if families do not have internet access at home.
  • We will be collecting computers that were checked out last school year from students in all grades K-6 in order to prepare them for the upcoming school year.

Gunston is holding a curbside collection of all student laptops on August 5, 2020. We are collecting laptops in order to prepare them for the upcoming school year by grade level at the following times:

  • Rising 7th  Grade: 9:00am-10:00am
  • Rising 6th   Grade: 10:00am-11:00am
  • Rising 5th   Grade 11:00am-12:00pm
  • Rising 4th Grade 12:00pm-1:00pm
  • Rising 3rd Grade 1:00pm-2:00pm
  • Rising 2nd Grade 2:00pm-3:00pm
  • Rising 1st Grade 3:00pm-4:00pm

When you arrive at Gunston, please pull up to the main entrance and wait for a staff member to come to your car. You will remain in your car and pass the laptop to the staff member. Be prepared to wait for a moment so that we may scan the device in.

Please remember to have your charger as well.

If you are unable to return your laptop on this date or have any questions regarding this process please contact Mrs. Opie at elopie@fcps.edu
