A Message from Mrs. Kirkpatrick

While plans are underway for a successful kick off to the 2020-2021 school year, I realize you may have questions about our master schedule, programming and teachers.

Planning is in high gear to develop a solid academic and social emotional support structure for our students in a virtual setting. While this is not ideal, I am impressed with the tools, training and materials that are being developed. There is a tremendous amount of work that is being done in our central offices around the clock. Some of our staff have been highly engaged in exploring resources, participating in the FCPS Equity Symposium, and diving into virtual training through the National ISTE Summer Learning Academy. We are hard at work to get ready for the school year and look forward to welcoming your children back on September 8th.

It is important to share updates with our community so you can also prepare. Next week Dr. Beaty and I will hold a parent coffee to provide updates for the start of the school year. We will be able to provide a clearer picture of the academic day and share additional details for our virtual start. We also want an opportunity to welcome our kindergarten families as well as our new families that are new to the Chesterbrook community. Please join us in these virtual opportunities. Our parent coffee will be recorded and shared with the community.

Please save the date and join us for these Virtual Gatherings.
You may access any of these meetings with this link.

Yearbook and Student Item Pickup from Spring

We have a number of pre-purchased yearbooks and bags with student items that remain at school from the spring. If you need to pick up your child's materials, please make an appointment with the front office and we will have items available for you to grab and go.  We are at school between 10-2 most days. Please email our Administrative Assistant, Pat Pence, and she will make sure your item is ready for contactless pickup when you arrive. We ask that you schedule to pickup items by Friday, August 7th.

Chesterbrook Student Laptops

Do you have a Chesterbrook student laptop at home from the spring? We are preparing to collect the laptops for reimaging and redistribution this school year. Laptops will be collected the week of August 10th.

FCPS will offer a device to any student that needs one to access virtual instruction. We will be collecting information and setting up distribution to students later in August. Students who need a laptop will have one issued prior to the first day of school.

Are you considering a device purchase?

For those families who are considering purchasing devices for their students' use and who request purchasing guidance, we recommend looking into Windows-compatible laptops, since most FCPS-specific applications function best in Windows. Those with solid state drives (SSD) are also recommended for durability.

Information on hardware and software discounts for FCPS students is available on the FCPS Technology @ Home webpage:  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/technologyhome.

For additional options including refurbished equipment, families may consider local technology stores such as Micro Center. Any questions regarding technology purchases can be directed to Mark Rueffert, Chesterbrook ES Technology Support Specialist, at MRueffert@fcps.edu.

During the summer, routines are still important for children! You can even get their input on their ideal schedules over the summer, then make a compromise, so they feel empowered and more independent.
