Hughes MS Updates

Principal's Message

Parents and guardians,

School will start with virtual learning for all students on September 8th.The Langston Hughes staff and students will be building on the lessons learned in our Distance Learning format at the end of last year.  We understand that there are significant academic and social/emotional challenges to our students learning remotely.  FCPS has strengthened the digital learning model so that all schools can provide an even more rigorous and engaging virtual learning program with greater connections for all students.   The details as we know them now are:

  • Online learning will provide four days (Tuesday through Friday) of live, face-to-face instruction with teachers.
  • We will follow an A(Blue)/B(Grey) block schedule.
  • The school day will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • Student work will be graded, and attendance is required.
  • Mondays will remain a teacher planning day with intervention supports for selected students. All other students will work on assignments for class.

At Langston Hughes, we are committed to supporting the entire community in starting the school year successfully. Look for a mailing to your home next week with more information and some forms that need to be filled out before school starts.

Sincerely,

Aimée Monticchio

Principal

Hello!

This year Langston Hughes will be holding a virtual orientation called Panther Preview. The purpose of Panther Preview is for 7th grade parents and students to get to know about Langston and prepare for the upcoming year.

Information will be provided on student life, school resources, organization, and Panther POWER. Parents who have already registered should have received an email that includes more information and a reminder for students to enroll in the Class of 2026 Google Classroom.

If you would like to register your student to participate, please complete the link here: https://forms.gle/woHPpvF7wojPUaxVA

Attached you can see the schedule of synchronous sessions. There will also be asynchronous material for students to complete. There will be opportunities to earn raffle tickets for prizes through synchronous and asynchronous work.

Please encourage your student to participate and we welcome you to participate with them to learn about all Langston has to offer your student this year. For questions please contact Kristina Burke at ktburke@fcps.edu Thank you!

Dear Langston Community

I hope this finds you and your family well.

I am assuming the position as president of the PTA for the 2020-2021 school year; even though we don't know how things will be, I'd like to, first of all, welcome you to our school and our community.

I firmly believe that family's involvement with our kids' education is very important, but we can't do without your help.

Please see below the list of positions we have, some are already filled, but we certainly can use some extra hands to try to keep our school and routine as normal as possible.

If you see something you like, please feel free to email me and I'll sign you up for that position.

Please note that the two highlighted positions are fulfilled but it would be great to have someone shadowing us this year so you will be ready for the next term as we'll be moving out going to High School.

Supporting our Community/ Community Resources

Back to School Bash (B2SB)

While we are not able to have our annual B2SB event in person this year, FCPS has adopted our idea of taking it virtual on a countywide level. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it was a SL pyramid event that provided families access to community resources to support families in being ready for the school year. It included school system, local government and non-profit groups that support access to such things as: food resources, housing, medical assistance, transportation, mental wellness, recreation and more. We also provided vouchers for free haircuts, vision screenings, did school supply giveaways and more.

The core team (Cornerstones, Reston Community Center, YMCA Reston, Fairfax County NCS and select staff from FCPS) for this group is now focusing on supporting the virtual platform while also helping to raise money for school supply kits. The FCPS Foundation (non-profit) is running a Collect for Kids campaign. A $10 donation buys a kit. Kits are designed for either the elementary or secondary level. If you use this specific link the money will be earmarked for South Lakes pyramid schools https://www.collectforkids.org/reston

The Fairfax County Library System

Check out how to access books, the summer reading challenge, online story time for younger students and other opportunities at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/

Food Pantry

The SLHS PTSA Food Pantry continues its great work serving over 100 families each week. If you are interested in contributing items or making a financial donation please check out their site at https://southlakesptsa.org/the-pantry/

Important TDAP Requirement Information

The Code of Virginia requires that all students entering 7th grade receive the Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) booster prior to the beginning of school, including those students who choose all virtual instruction. Students who have received a Tdap booster at age 7 or older will meet the school immunization requirement for Tdap and will not need another dose.

Students will need to provide one of the following documents prior to the first day of school:

  • A copy of the student’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine.
  • A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Tdap vaccine was given.
  • A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  • A notarized Religious Exemption Form which is available online at:

http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/health_medical/certificate_religious_exemption.pdf

Please be on the lookout for a letter to be mailed to your home address on file.
