Daniels Run Down-Family Edition-July 31, 2020

The Principal's Desk!

Greetings Families,

We are working to finalize details regarding the opening of school events such as Welcome Walk, Back to School Night, and laptop distribution.  We will share these details once they are finalized.  This coming week we will have staff members and PTA board members working in groups to help finalize plans for opening of school year events.

Feedback from Families

  • We would like your feedback regarding Distance Learning. Please complete the feedback form..  The form will close on Monday, August 10th.
  • I will be hosting a weekly opportunity for families to ask questions and provide feedback.  These meetings will occur each Monday, from 5-6 pm using Blackboard Collaborate, starting Monday, August 3rd.

Rising Kindergarten Events:

Our Kindergarten team met yesterday to plan and develop opening of school year events.  We will hold a Kindergarten parent meeting with our Kindergarten teachers on August 11th at 5:00 pm (English) and 6:00 pm (Spanish).  You can access the meeting using Blackboard Collaborate.  This will be a chance for our Kindergarten families to meet our Kindergarten teachers and ask questions.  We will also be sharing information on additional events/opportunities for Kindergarten students and families to meet our teachers once they are finalized.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns (cmsmith@fcps.edu)

Thanks for your support,

Chris Smith

Class Placements!

As we have done in the past, our current plan is to communicate students class placements via their teachers during the week of August 17, 2020.

School Begins Virtually on September 8, 2020

Please be informed that students will no longer return on August 25th. The decision was made so that teachers can receive additional time to prepare for your children in the fall with high quality instruction.

News from our Social Worker - Mrs. Lonergan

Dear Daniels Run Family,

After what feels like a lifetime at Daniels Run ES, I will be moving on to another challenge this fall.  I have accepted a full-time social work position at Greenbriar East ES.  I will miss all the children and families of Daniels Run.   Your immediate response when a child or family needs something – help with camp, holiday gifts, clothing or food is always so incredible – the list could go on and on.  Thanks for all the love and care you have shown me as well throughout the years.  Since I now will have two kids attending Fairfax High School,  I hope to see you all around and in the community – at least once this whole COVID thing is over.  Take care and I’ll miss you all.

Beth

Note from Mr. Smith - we have a new social worker and we will announce her next week once the process is finalized

Book Donations!

Calling all books and book lovers! We had an amazing community event last week where we were able to give out free books to students. We would love to be able to host similar events in the near future, and we welcome any and all book donations to share with our Daniels Run students. If you have any new or gently used books, please drop them off at the entrance of the school. You may place them inside the box labeled “Book Donations” any time Monday- Friday between 9:00am-3:00pm. We can’t wait to get some more exciting and inspiring books into our students’ hands! Stay tuned for more information.

Laptops!

As we prepare for the upcoming school year we need to ensure that our student laptops are ready for our start date of school ( Sept 8th ) .  Important in doing that is making sure our Daniels Run laptops have received all the updates necessary for them to access FCPS educational resources. If you have received an FCPS laptop to participate in distance learning please perform the important steps below.

We need your help in ensuring that the following is done with your student’s FCPS issued laptop. Please complete the following steps once per week in August to ensure the laptop has the latest updates.

  • Plug the device into an outlet.
  • Turn the device on and let it boot / start  up.
  • Ensure it is connected to the internet at your location.
  • Let the device sit for 30 minutes. No additional log-in’s or activities are required.

Questions? Please contact Lawrence Veasley at laveasley@fcps.edu

Yearbooks!

The yearbooks have come in and are ready to be picked up. If you have not been able to pick up yours, please contact Mr. Parker at mrparker@fcps.edu to arrange a pick up time.

A very special thank you to our Daniels Run PTA who have purchased a yearbook for all our sixth graders.
