Summer Learning Programs

Edison High School, along with all schools within FCPS, will remain closed through the end of July. Therefore, we will continue to provide optional, tuition free, virtual learning opportunities for students from June 29 to July 31.

Please see the below information about two different learning options available.

Credit Recovery/Intervention

Virtual credit recovery and intervention classes through an online program called Edmentum will be available for students who:

-- have failed a course and need to recover course credit.
-- have passed a course but who could use practice time to improve their skills. No grade will be received for these students.

The dates for the credit recovery/intervention program are July 6 - July 24 and students can register for up to two classes. The following classes will be offered:

-- English 9, English 10, and English 11
-- US/VA Government

If you are interested in enrolling in a Credit Recovery/Intervention course, please fill out this form. Counselors will also be contacting individual students who could benefit from these courses.

Continuity of Learning and ESOL Student Support

All students currently in grades 9-11 will have access to a Continuity of Learning Google Site that provides practice on essential skills to review over the summer. The Google Sites will be located on the Free Summer Offerings page and is now live. The Mathematics site will focus on practice of essential mathematics content. The Language Arts site will provide practice on grammar and mechanics and offer choice reading opportunities.

A supplemental English Language Development Summer Practice Book will be mailed to students enrolled in High School ESOL Newcomer Programming (ELP Level 1 & 2) in Grades 9 - 11. These books will provide English Language Development practice activities to support and enrich language development during the summer. High school English learners enrolled in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 in the spring of 2020 will be mailed an Algebra preparation math packet.

IB Information for Next School Year

We will be offering the IB courses we would have offered without the pandemic and students do not need to select the face-to-face option in order to take IB courses. The central office and the schools have met to discuss different strategies that we can implement as a county to make the best of this difficult situation. This is an evolving process, but staff will work diligently to make sure we can accommodate the various needs of our students.

Reminder: Parents Must Choose Education Option for 2020-2021

Thomas A. Edison High School Named Recognized by the Virginia Board of Education

We have been recognized for high student achievement or continuous improvement by the Virginia Board of Education. This award is based on performance and practice during 2018-19 and prior years. We were honored based on the following criteria:

• A 10-point increase in the combined rate in reading and math, and in the pass rate in science;
• A 10-point increase in the combined rate in reading and math for two or more student groups across three years;
• A decrease in the chronic absenteeism rate for three years; or
• For schools with a graduating class, an increase in the Graduation and Completion Index and a decrease in the dropout rate for three years.

We appreciate that the support of our Edison families to their children’s education is critically important in reaching this milestone.
