Summer Reading Assignment

This year’s summer read will be a choice book.  Here is your challenge:

Select a book by an author/with a main character who has a different perspective from your own.  Be ready to discuss the book with your English teacher at the beginning of the school year.

For some help finding diverse titles, consider visiting the following websites:

Cooperative Children’s Book Center

We Need Diverse Books

If you are looking for a book that captures our current events, this would be a good time to revisit our 2016 summer reading book:

March: Book One, a graphic novel autobiography by Congressman John Lewis, the last remaining speaker from the 1963 March on Washington.  You can even watch a video of the time he visited Westfield High School and spoke to a packed gym on our website: https://westfieldhs.fcps.edu/academics/2020-summer-assignments

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson can be found in eBook format through the Fairfax County Public Library’s database RBDigital.    The copy they have is the youth version of the book.

Literature can be a window into another world, but it can also be a mirror we hold up to ourselves and our society. We hope you’ll join us in the celebration of reading powerful books.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

If you do not have a Fairfax County Public Library Card, go to the FCPL home page at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/ and scroll down until you see “Register for an Account”. After creating this account, you will receive a virtual temporary FCPL card.

Fairfax County - RBDigital:

https://fairfaxcova.rbdigital.com/ This database has almost 30,000 eBooks and Audio books. These books can be checked out to several people simultaneously. Please try out the different features that it has to offer.

As a Fairfax County resident, there is a reciprocal agreement with several other jurisdictions in our area, so you can also apply for a Loudoun County Public Library Card at https://library.loudoun.gov/.

Loudoun County - Hoopla:

Hoopla, like RBDigital, has the advantage of allowing multiple users to access the same title simultaneously. The library application and card are virtual, so it’s easy to sign up and use the card. If you have never used Hoopla or Loudoun County Public Library, follow the directions on the Loudoun Library website to complete the application and gain access to this online resource.

If you need assistance, please contact either one of the Westfield HS Librarians: Mrs. Lesser, jtlesser@fcps.edu or Mrs. Koenig at amkoenig@fcps.edu
