Dear Parents/Guardians,

Happy Summer to you! We are so proud of the resilience and sense of community that continued to permeate as we all pulled together to support each other and our students. We know this spring has been hard on our students, staff and families. We also know this unprecedented time has allowed families time to slow down, enjoy more meals together, and find unique ways to still stay connected with other families and friends.

FCPS school buildings will remain closed through the end of July for students and parents. With so many camps canceled for the summer months, families may be also looking for opportunities for their kids. FCPS will continue to provide distance learning opportunities for students throughout the summer. If you want to access these optional opportunities, they are here for you to use, with flexibility, to fit within your family's schedule.

I know that summer is also meant to be a time for families to enjoy time together, rejuvenate and encourage kids to just be kids, and I am supportive of that important part too. Regardless if your family chooses to participate in any of these opportunities, I hope your child gets the chance to read every day, spend time writing and practicing math facts during the week, and enjoying a lot of time outdoors and with family. We hope for your family's continued health and wellness.

Take care,

Ken Junge

Continuity of Learning Summer Opportunities (All Grades)

Continuity of Instruction Summer Learning Packets (All Grades)

Students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail by the end of June. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page within Blackboard 24-7.  Use your child's FCPS credentials to access. These books will provide recommended practice activities for students to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content from next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year.

iReady Universal Screener Reading and Math Program (All Grades)

Your students will have access to optional Reading and Mathematics online skills practice through the iReady program through the FCPS public Universal Screener website. This online skills practice is a game-based, interactive program, tailored to your child's specific strengths/needs, based on their Winter 2020 iReady assessments, for both Reading and Math. Students will need to enter their FCPS login credentials to access these resources. These digital activities are available through Friday, July 31. Click here for a helpful tutorial “How To Use iReady at Home”.pdf

Virtual Office Hours with CRES Teachers (All Grades)

As students access these activities from June 29 to July 31, they will have the opportunity to attend one optional virtual office hour each week with one of our CRES staff members. To register your child for office hours, please click here and complete the registration form by Sunday, June 28th. This is an opportunity for teachers to provide academic assistance, answer questions regarding the packet material/iReady, and provide support for students and families when working through the packet or online iReady. There will not be new instruction or teaching of any lessons. Students who sign up have the option to use these sessions as needed.

Special Education Services – Virtual Extended School Year

FCPS will provide Extended School Year (ESY) to students, grades PreK thru 12th grades, whose IEP team determines that the student qualifies for ESY due to significant regression and lack of recovery of skills that were gained during the regular school year prior to the shutdown.

This summer, ESY services will be provided virtually to students June 29-July 24. The learning will be provided through the continued Distance Learning model. The learning materials will be available online and in printed packets mailed to students.

Summer Reading Programs (All Grades)

Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Programs

The Fairfax County Public Library has developed several summer reading programs for youth and adults. Click here to take a look at different programs you can utilize with your children this summer.

Project CRES “Children Reading Every Summer”

CRES is encouraging each student to take time to enjoy reading a book this summer. You might decide to read while relaxing at the beach or under a shaded tree in your backyard. Have someone take a picture of you reading a book, then fill in the sheet titled, Children Reading Every Summer. Return the paper to the Front Lobby at Meet the Teacher or on the first day of school. They will be displayed around Colvin Run for you to see what your friends enjoyed reading this summer.

Remember to put your first and last name on the paper. Those students who return their paper will be entered into a drawing to create a feature video for our annual PTO Book Fair aired on CRES 4-1-1. Click here to print your child’s copy. Happy Reading!!
