MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL: Yearbook Distribution and EOY Info

Dear Westfield Community:

We have completed the 2019-2020 school year. As you may recall, we started the year celebrating our 20th anniversary. We reflected on our history in several areas, and many groups incorporated the 20th anniversary theme into their activities.

I want to encourage you keep your student engaged with the free continuity of learning activities FCPS has provided this summer. With a little effort each week, your student can be better prepared for the academic rigors of the 2020-2021 school year.

Finally, I would like to welcome the Class of 2021 to its senior year and the Class of 2024 to its freshman year. We look forward to working with the seniors as they enter their final year of secondary education. Senior year passes quickly. Enjoy your senior year but stay focused on finishing high school strong and prepared for the next chapter of your life. To our freshmen, the next four years will pass relatively quickly. Westfield has so much to offer not only in the classroom, but also through more than 80 clubs and activities. There is a way for you to get involved in our school, I encourage you to find it. If you need guidance, do not hesitate to ask an administrator, counselor, or teacher.

GO BULLDOGS!

Anthony E. Copeland, PhD

Principal

High School Continuity of Learning Communication

FCPS school buildings will remain closed through the end of July. Therefore, we will continue to provide optional, virtual learning opportunities for students from June 29 to July 31. Students currently in grades 9-11 will have access to a Google Site that provides practice on essential skills to review over the summer. The Google Site(s) will be located on the Free Summer Offerings page and will be live by June 24. The Mathematics site will focus on practice of essential mathematics content. The Language Arts site will provide practice on grammar and mechanics and offer choice reading opportunities.

A supplemental English Language Development Summer Practice Book will be mailed to students enrolled in High School ESOL Newcomer Programming (ELP Level 1 & 2) in Grades 9 - 11. These books will provide English Language Development practice activities to support and enrich language development during the summer. High school English Learners enrolled in Individual Math and Algebra 1 Part 1 in the spring of 2020 will mailed an Algebra preparation focused math packet.

Students with disabilities accessing the Adapted Curriculum will receive four packets mailed to families in July to support their learning.

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, teachers will hold one hour per week of “office hours” for Continuity of Learning. Back-to-School BBQ Survey Reminder

Early in the 2019-2020 school year, we made a presentation/proposal to Westfield students, staff, and the PTSA to pilot combing the Bulldog BBQ, Back to School Night, and Freshman and New Student Orientation into an all-day event called to be held in August called the Bulldog Back to School BBQ.

Please complete the survey by June 22nd to make your preference known.  We will provide feedback on the overall results.

Free/Reduced Meal Funds

In case you are not aware, families whose students qualify for Free or Reduced meals may apply for funds visiting the link below:   Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a temporary food benefit available in Virginia to families with children who would have received free or reduced-price meals if schools were open. The program is authorized through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service. The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) are working together to operate the program. https://www.dss.virginia.gov/benefit/pebt.cgi

Food and Nutrition Services will continue to provide breakfast and lunches as we have at the following sites in the Chantilly and Westfield area:  school sites:  Brookfield ES, Centre Ridge ES and London Towne ES meals are available Monday - Friday, 10:00 - 1:00 through June 30.

Summer Learning Virtual Credit Recovery Algebra 1 Staffing

Middle school students who completed Algebra 1 this school year (2019-20) are eligible to take the Edmentum Algebra 1 course this summer to improve their understanding before starting the next level Mathematics course.  Students will receive a grade but not another course credit.  There is no Honors weight given for the summer course.

Middle school students who take a high school credit-bearing course are able to submit the IS-104 to request that the course be expunged.  If needed, high schools can add a math teacher to their summer virtual credit recovery staff allotment to support these learners.

Upcoming ACT and SAT Exams

FCPS will not be hosting the July 18 ACT exam. We hope to have more information soon to confirm whether or not schools will be able to host the August 29, 2020, SAT. The decision will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Report Card Mailing for 4th Quarter

Report cards for 4th quarter will be produced centrally for all secondary schools, except for those parents and/or guardians who have opted to “Go Paperless.” Final grades should be completed by Monday, June 15 at 11:59 p.m. and will be visible in ParentVUE and StudentVUE. We anticipate the printed report cards will be provided to the postal service by July 1. Actual delivery to homes will be dependent on the postal service. School addresses will be used as the return address on the report cards.
