Courageous Conversations - A Dialogue to Discuss Race, Racism, and Responsiveness at Oakton High School

We want to thank the students who joined school staff in this important conversation.  We will be continuing to expand on these opportunities with the new school year.  I would also encourage all students to check their grade level google classroom sites to find a letter I posted to them on this important topic.

Summer Continuity of Learning

To support student learning from June 29 to July 31, teachers will hold one hour per week of “office hours” for Continuity of Learning. Office hours for Mathematics, Language Arts, and English Language Development will be with one of our own outstanding staff members and are intended to support students with the digital practice resources and the English Language Development Summer Practice Book. Attendance is optional.

Office hour dates/times will be released soon.

To register your student for office hours and receive a secure link, please complete this form.   Once registered, your child will receive log-in information through his or her FCPS Google email address prior to the first session.

Opus Literary Magazine

The 2020 edition of The Opus Strides Literary Magazine has been published. The students and staff have worked very hard to get it together this year.   Congratulations to all of our editors and students who had their pieces included.  A copy can also be found on Oakton's website.

Yearbook Update

We are still awaiting the final shipment date of our 2020 yearbooks.  As soon as we get our delivery date, we will organize a pick-up for anyone who ordered a yearbook.

Parent Resources

FCPS has compiled a list of mental health resources that you may find beneficial.  All of the resources can be accessed here at any time.  Mental health resources and emergency services information can be found here.

Parent Response to Risky Student Behavior

During a time of disruption, students may find themselves feeling frustrated, isolated, or bored. They may turn to risky behaviors, including the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs.

Virtual supports are available from FCPS. Contact your school administrator or counselor who can refer you to your school-based substance abuse prevention specialist (SAPS). To learn more about the SAPS program, watch the six-minute FCPS video: Parent Presentation: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs. The presentation features SAPS program professionals who discuss risk factors that make some students more likely to abuse substances and how parents can influence student decisions.

Do you have concerns about student vaping? Once again, your school counselor can help you. Also, you can watch Vaping: What Every Parent Should Know, a one-minute FCPS video.

Get more information about the SAPS program and vaping.

Last week all families who signed up for the photo opportunity were provided a time for Monday or Tuesday of this week.  It was great to see so many students dressed up in their graduation regalia!

Virtual Graduation and Celebration Ceremony

Next up is our virtual graduation and celebration ceremony!  Students had to opt in to this ceremony, if your student did not opt-in, we were unable to include them in the video.  Information and directions were mailed to both parents and students, with students receiving the specific link to modify his/her slide.

The ceremony itself will include speeches and highlights from this year.
