Dear GBE Families,
It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the end of the school year! I can’t thank you enough for all your support during the changes and challenges we’ve faced, especially as we transitioned to Distance Learning. GBE is a tremendous school community and I am honored to serve as your principal! We were happy to announce Mrs. Showker as our new assistant principal. Her experience and leadership will support our vision of an inclusive learning community for all GBE students. An inclusive learning community where each student is seen, heard, and knows they belong.
We hope to see many of our Sixth Grade families on Friday for our Sixth Grade Send-off! For all families, please make sure to communicate to your homeroom teacher tomorrow if you plan on donating your student’s belongings and will not pick-up at school. Also, our final News Show link will be sent on Friday morning with a special slideshow to celebrate the school year.
The front office is still closed through the month of July. You can email djpietzman@fcps.edu or hwilliams@fcps.edu between now and July 31st. This has definitely been a school year to remember. My wife and I are expecting a baby in October, so we are going to spend most of our summer preparing our home for our new baby boy! Big sisters are very excited. I hope all of our families have a wonderful summer break!

Summer Continuity of Learning
Students currently in grades K-6 will receive both a Mathematics and a Language Arts Essentials Summer Practice Book in the mail by the end of June. Digital versions of the books will also be posted on the Continuity of Learning Blackboard page. These books will provide recommended practice activities for students to review essential content from the 2019-2020 school year; they are not intended to preview content from next year’s grade level but rather reinforce essential learning from this past year.
As students access these activities from June 29 to July 31, they will have the opportunity to attend one virtual office hour each week with one of our own outstanding staff members. The schedule is as follows:
Kindergarten: Dawn Garey Tuesdays 11:00am-12:00pm
Grade 1: Laura Shepherd Tuesdays 10:00-11:00am
Grade 2: Sara Perriello Fridays 10:00-11:00am
Grade 3: Lisa Green Wednesdays 11:00am-12:00pm
Grade 4: Sabra Lowery Wednesdays 10:00-11:00am
Grade 5: Jacquelyn Argodale Tuesdays 2:00-3:00pm
Grade 6: Rachel Cohen Wednesdays 12:00-1:00pm
Special Education: Hannah Miller Mondays 1:00-2:00pm
English Language Development: Lina Beardall Mondays 10:00-11:00am
To register your student for office hours and receive a secure link, please complete this Summer School Form by Monday June 22. Once registered, you will receive an email from your Continuity of Learning teacher prior to the start of summer school.
Sixth Grade Send-off
It's hard to believe that the children you sent to Kindergarten in the fall of 2013 are now preparing to start middle school this fall! Although we won't be able to gather in the gym for a 6th grade promotion ceremony this year, we do want to honor our 6th graders with a special send-off on Friday, June 12th.
On June 12th, the admin team will be in front of the school with 6th grade classroom teachers during the following times:
8:30-10:00 - Ms. Henne
10:00 - 11:30 - Mrs. Ballard, Ms. Cahill
12:00-1:30 - Mrs. Fairbanks
1:30 - 3:00 Ms. Cohen
3:00-4:30 - Ms. Tomaselli, Mrs. Roughani
Our specialists (P.E., Art, Music, Technology and Library) will also stop by throughout the day to join in the send-off!
In order to adhere to safety guidelines, please do the following on June 12th:
- Before leaving home, make sure that your 6th grade student(s) sit on the passenger side of the vehicle. Please also make a sign with your student's name and homeroom teacher clearly printed and display it in your window.
- Families will stay in their cars and drive through the bus loop.
- When your car arrives at the front of the line, we will give your student a certificate, a goodie bag, and take a photo while they remain in their car. We will also return your student’s belongings that were left at school before the closing.
- As you pull out of the bus loop, teachers will be standing at least six feet apart along the exit loop to wave and send your students off with a smile!
As one more way to celebrate our 6th graders, we invite you to decorate a door at your house--your front door, your student's bedroom door, a garage door, any door! You can use photos, wrapping paper, graduation-themed decorations, or whatever you'd like to celebrate your 6th grader. Take a photo of your decorated door and send it to our School Based Technology Specialist, Liz Caligiuri at EACaligiuri@fcps.edu by June 11th.
On June 15th, look for an email with photo collages of the decorated doors, photos of students with their certificates in cars, slides that 6th graders created themselves, and a special message to 6th graders from GBE teachers!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Natalie Lorenzi at nllorenzi@fcps.edu.

1.Tell us a little bit about what brought you to GBE.
A number of years ago, I volunteered to help in the library where my children went to school, and when the school needed to hire a library assistant, they asked me to fill the job. Some years later, I was lucky enough to be offered the position at GBE, and have enjoyed working here ever since.
2. How did your career path lead to working in schools?
The words “career path” sound very organized, which I fear is not at all how my life looks! I studied physics in college and then went to work at a naval laboratory. I liked the way the engineers and scientists there were trying to find the way to make the theory we learn in school meet the real physics of submarines in the ocean. When my husband and I decided to have children, I wanted to be at home with them, and was lucky enough to have that choice. So, together with my new ‘career’ in library work, I have had three rewarding jobs.
3. What is something that we might not know about you?
Looking back, I remember that my big hobby when I was young was drawing. I was always drawing, and I liked using pencil so that I could erase again and again until the lines looked right. As time went by, though, I became more interested in color and how beautiful colors looked together. Today, I almost never draw but still find great joy in the colors of the world and the textures that can make even the same color look different.
4. What was your favorite thing about school growing up?
This is an easy one. I enjoyed finding out new things, so the words of the teachers and the schoolwork were a pathway to where I wanted to go. The same is true today—I am always curious to know more.

To Our Music Students!
Thank you for such an amazing year! We, the music teachers at GBE, want to highlight some of the most amazing parts of the year, and give tribute to those we missed!
This year, we put on a Veterans Day concert with grades 2 and 3! We had a school-wide winter celebration sing-a-long! We had a 5th grade Hootenanny! We put on a 6th grade musical! We played ukulele, recorder, xylophone, boomwhackers, and all sorts of percussion instruments! We sang and danced and played games together! We discovered the language of music, and we explored how music makes us feel.
Sadly, we missed a lot of things too. We didn’t get to celebrate Music in our Schools Month, or Arbor Day, or 5th grade chorus, or All County Choir. But we didn’t let being out of school stop us from having music surround us!
In virtual school, we got to hold our Talent Show! (watch our amazing students here!) We used a daily calendar to keep music in our lives! We posted videos and information on instagram! We got to see our students in their virtual classrooms and play some games during office hours! Through it all, we’ve missed our students.
We are so proud of all of you. This summer, remember that music is all around you! When you watch movies or TV, listen for the music. When you celebrate something, listen for the music. When you feel happy, sad, scared, angry, silly, excited, and worried, find the music to make you feel better. When we see you again, we will all have learned so much!
Don’t forget to keep up with us on instagram @greenbriareastmusic, twitter @gbemusic, and on the student site. Have a great summer!
We love you,
Mr. Lupton, Mrs. Otto, and Ms. Cartwright

iReady Mathematics Instruction Available for Current Kindergarten Students June and July
In addition to reading, mathematics is now available for current kindergarten students in iReady during June and July of 2020 at no additional cost. This is being turned on to provide optional individual practice to students. Students may access iReady instruction as soon as it is practical for schools, teachers, and students. Lessons are curated based on current grade-level content. Access to iReady will be turned off August 1, 2020.
Students will access iReady instruction through the FCPS public Universal Screener website, where they will enter their FCPS login credentials. Though teachers are not required to use iReady lessons, teachers are expected to demonstrate to students how to access the resource. A short presentation on how to support this task is available at FCPS-iReady Onboard Lesson Presentation.
